After warming up, run 4 x 400m at approximately 5K pace with a minute rest between each repetition. Rest for 2 minutes and then run one mile at approximately 10K pace. Roller coaster runs build up the cardiovascular system. Uphill runs strengthen the legs while downhill runs increase leg turnover. Pete Pfitzinger, runner and exercise physiologist, points out that running hilly courses is also a good way to increase mental toughness and train your body to endure sustained effort.

My runners don’t lift any weights. Except for a little core conditioning work, steep hill sprints. Are the only strength training they do, and they do them year-round, because you need strength at all times in the training process.
