Scattered Gardener

Sunday, 20 March 2011. Glorious sunny Sunday afternoon in the back garden. You know how as the season starts, it's hard to decide what to do first? I wandered round for almost an hour looking at the mess and wondering where to start, despite P having given the lawn its first cut of 2011 earlier in the day. Oak leaves strewn all over the place ( including covering the surface of the pond - is it too late to clear it? Alas dear readers it was the compost bin, my first experience of what can happen to worms...

Scattered Gardener: May 2010

http://scatteredgardener.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, 15 May 2010. Gardeners Bloom Day May 2010. Welcome to my spring garden - everything is late this year as the season has been colder than usual - but all the more welcome for the wait! From the front border, black tulips, red and orange wallflowers and bluebells. The colours are more vibrant in life, and have worked well together for three weeks now thanks to the cooler temperatures, which have neared frost, unusual in London in April and May. Down by the pond wilderness proliferates; periwinkle...

Scattered Gardener: Sweetcorn fungus?

http://scatteredgardener.blogspot.com/2010/10/sweetcorn-fungus.html

Sunday, 10 October 2010. P picked runner beans and sweetcorn on Monday - the beans looked promising but as they'd been on the vine so long, were very stringy, so we'll eat the rest in soups and stews without the sweet pods. Now here's a puzzle for you - what on earth happened to this sweetcorn cob? Fraid I know nothing about sweetcorn fungus, but youre right - that looks gross. 11 October 2010 at 00:45. It is in fact corn smut, and it was lucky I brought it home to put in the rubbish rather than adding i...

Saturday, 27 March 2010. Ledum to the rescue for puncture wounds. I should be on the allotment, but in the midst of clearing the strawberry bed I knelt on a rusty nail earlier this week. It went in about an inch, didn't bleed very much but I had to do a quick clean-up with some antiseptic wipes and a loose dressing, and come home. Are the indicated homeopathic remedies for this kind of deep puncture wound. I took 3 doses of Ledum 30. My knee is still painful, but a mix of Arnica. I feel very fortunate th...

Replace the current spider-infested shed (right) with something more civilized and useful. Greenhouse, buy, erect. Water butts collecting rainwater from the roofs of both. Continue soil conditioning over winter – 4 tonnes of finest rotted muck arrives in 5 days time. Build some raised beds. On October 15, 2008 at 8:09 pm. Greenhouse: I re...

Growing our own in North Yorkshire, for a third year. Laquo; Allotments hit by inflation. April 15, 2010 by allotmonaut. Raised bed stomped into place, filled with loam (from the turves I scutted off two years ago when I got no 16) and strawbs planted, a row of garlic (Solent Wight) and a row of chard alongside. However, the satisfaction of that was offset by turning another patch of ground and encountering a snake’s honeymoon of couch grass:. Posted in progress report. Son of soil slaves away. Coral bra...
