The first two digits are the year and the last digit designates the size for the motor. 0 - Standard Single. 1 - Deluxe Single. 3 - 75 Hp Twin. 6 - 30 Hp Twin. 7 - 5 Hp Twin. 8 - 10 Hp Twin. 9 - 16 Hp Twin. At a glance, then, you can tell that a 497 is a 5 Hp twin made in 1949, a 470 is a standard single made in 1947.
