Ramblings of a recovering insecureaholic. Slavery by Another Name – Pulitzer Adaptation. The Ring That Binds. Last year, my daughter joined a children’s singing group to raise money for orphans of war. One night, she tells me she’s singing at FODfest. I had no idea what she was talking about, but I dragged myself to the event, despite having a huge writing deadline. As I sat outside waiting, I kept thinking, man, I have so much work to do why am I here? Then, the music began. Founded in 2005 by musician,...

ramblings of a recovering insecureaholic: #FF List

Ramblings of a recovering insecureaholic. Slavery by Another Name - Pulitzer Adaptation. The Ring That Binds. I’ve chosen to recommend people in this format, because I need more than 140 characters to tell you why you might be interested in following them. When tweeters simply list a bunch of names with a #FF next to them, it never makes me click on someone. I tend to only take people’s recommendations if I have some basic information why they’d be interesting. I say “random” in the nicest of...I canR...

Ramblings of a recovering insecureaholic. Slavery by Another Name - Pulitzer Adaptation. The Ring That Binds. Monday, August 2, 2010. A Graveyard Writing Shift. Living in rural New York, I often drive the countryside for writing inspiration. This particular day, I needed to find a way to kill one of my characters. I wanted something unique for her death. Suddenly, my car’s ball joint snapped and twisted the front wheel perpendicular to the car. The car screeched to a halt, opposite a graveyard. Maybe he ...

Screenwriter and Script Consultant. Tuesday, August 24, 2010. CHARACTERS: Bringing Them to Life. Scripts with vague main characters get set down by studio or agency readers by p.10, if not sooner. Enhance your characters by giving them 4 traits. Of the 4, have 1 of them contrast with the others. Example, your main character might be ambitious, arrogant and uncaring about others. But his/her 4th trait might be that he/she is secretly afraid that his/her world is meaningless. Have a great writing day!

Screenwriter and Script Consultant. Saturday, March 5, 2011. MAIN CHARACTER: Failure Matters. 8220;What do you have to lose? Too few screenwriters ask this question of their main character. You can nail the dialog, render authentic characters and portray realistic events. You can imagine internal/external conflicts and take your reader through an emotional journey. But still, people will set down your script with a dismissive “that’s nice” if your character has nothing to lose. In “The Fighter̶...

What theater artists are thinking about, talking about and creating. Wof Blog (and other things). 2014 WOFFERS: Get to know them! Wof Blog (and other things). I Did It In the Window – And I Loved It - By Mya Kagan. August 28, 2014. When I have a good writing day, it makes me feel like skipping. I type quickly, grin at the computer screen, and suppress the urge to shout my exciting ideas out the window at neighbors and feral cats. Unless you’re writing in the window. WRITE LIKE AN EAGLE, EDIT LIKE A MOUSE.
