Scriptorium Scientifica

Swaddling Science in the Written Word. Monday, November 06, 2006. The colors of fall. The leaves are falling off the trees pretty quickly here in New England, but only after putting on a fantastic color display this year. I haven't seen blazing foliage like that in a while. But where do those colors come from? What causes that fiery display? In nature, you often find that brilliant colors are a signal for danger or distress. Me, I like to think of these colors as a sign that my favorite season is here.

Scriptorium Scientifica: Summer vacation is over...

http://scriptorum-scientifica.blogspot.com/2006/09/summer-vacation-is-over.html

Swaddling Science in the Written Word. Monday, September 18, 2006. Summer vacation is over. And the Scriptorium is back. My apologies for the silence the last few months. Posted by Tom Ulrich at 9:04 PM. Links to this post:. Boston, MA, United States. I'm a husband, a dad, a science writer, an ex-scientist, a New Englander, a gadget addict, and a photographer. This is the second blog I've started, the first one having been limited to science. This time around I figure, why stop there? Can you hear me now?

Scriptorium Scientifica: Getting in touch with your -ome

http://scriptorum-scientifica.blogspot.com/2006/05/getting-in-touch-with-your-ome.html

Swaddling Science in the Written Word. Monday, May 01, 2006. Getting in touch with your -ome. Since the human genome project was completed (a feat that, according to some, was actually accomplished 3 times), the sound "-ome" has been emanating softly from laboratories around the globe. But it has nothing to do with meditation and everything to do with, well, everything. So how many "-omes" are there? Well the list is big. And seemingly getting bigger. Kinome (the total catalog of kinases. A holistic biol...

Scriptorium Scientifica: It's like the Oscars, but for academics

http://scriptorum-scientifica.blogspot.com/2006/10/its-like-oscars-but-for-academics.html

Swaddling Science in the Written Word. Monday, October 02, 2006. It's like the Oscars, but for academics. The awards were established in the will of Alfred Nobel, who, according to the Nobel Prize website, was "a scientist, inventor, entrepreneur, author and pacifist." He also happened to be the man who invented dynamite. The will said, in part:. Nobel died in 1896, but the first award was not given until 1901. The reason? His family contested the will. Ahh, sweet litigation. I'd better have some coffee!

Scriptorium Scientifica: Nobel Prize updates - have you got your scorecard out?

http://scriptorum-scientifica.blogspot.com/2006/10/nobel-prize-updates-have-you-got-your.html

Swaddling Science in the Written Word. Wednesday, October 04, 2006. Nobel Prize updates - have you got your scorecard out? Since my last Nobel prize post. Two more of the Nobel prizes for 2006 have been handed out. On Tuesday, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded. To John Mather and George Smoot for their efforts to peer into the earliest moments of the universe. Dr. Smoot. Should not be confused with Oliver Smoot, another MIT alum. Whose physical stature was the basis for the smoot. Links to this post:.

Thursday, January 09, 2014. What Compelled Them to Stay? In John 6, Jesus taught some things that were extremely difficult for many of his followers to accept. We are told that many of his disciples deserted him at that point. Jesus then turned to the remaining twelve and asked them, " Will you also go away. What was so compelling about the words of Jesus that causes Peter to say, " To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. What are the words of eternal life? It is a Divine compulsion.

Collected essays, columns, etc. by Graham Crumb. The reason for rules. Written for the Vanuatu Daily Post. When it looks like this country is committing slow, deliberate suicide. Yet still, you light up and smoke. The incremental pain of staying hooked is nothing to the agony of quitting. Until that fateful day when you realise that if you want to live, you have to set some limits. It’s just bad strategy. In this game, there are no winners, only losers. But let’s not be too quick to lurch into that famil...
