Offering pelagic trips from Hatteras, North Carolina USA to explore our near shore, dynamic ecosystem formed by the combination of the Continental Shelf edge and the Gulf Stream current. Sunday, March 22, 2015. Winter 2015 - Thanks, Thoughts, and More Pics. Atlantic Puffin (Dave Pereksta). I was a bit surprised that we only saw one puffin this winter, but it was a good look. Puffins are regular in numbers off the Virginia Capes most winters, but sporadic here. Color Change (Todd McGrath). I was surprised...

Offering pelagic trips from Hatteras, North Carolina USA to explore our near shore, dynamic ecosystem formed by the combination of the Continental Shelf edge and the Gulf Stream current. Sunday, May 31, 2015. Sunday May 31, 2015 by Steve NG Howell. Things got quiet and hot, like yesterday, but Brian persisted with working the slick, knowing from long experience that time chum = birds. As we worked the slick a couple of female/immature Mesoplodon. Beaked whales appeared and kept us company, seeming quite ...

Offering pelagic trips from Hatteras, North Carolina USA to explore our near shore, dynamic ecosystem formed by the combination of the Continental Shelf edge and the Gulf Stream current. Wednesday, May 20, 2015. Wednesday May 20, 2015. People gathered before 0515 this morning, excited and ready for a day offshore from Hatteras aboard the Stormy Petrel II. A nice surprise for our first spring trip! Cetaceans were not abundant, but we had quick views of a few Mesoplodons. Small black and white shearwater 3.

Shorebirder: Misc birding, flight home (June 27-28)

http://www.shorebirder.com/2015/07/misc-birding-flight-home-june-27-28.html

Monday, July 6, 2015. Misc birding, flight home (June 27-28). My last two days in Washington revolved around Ryan and Evie's wedding festivities. On the morning of the 27th I leisurely made my way from Wenatchee to Poulsbo for the wedding that afternoon. My only stop to bird came in Tacoma to quickly check for that Slaty-backed Gull. Again, nothing. We all had a blast at the wedding last night. Not much sleep was had, which is a sign of a great time. Your typical moist lowland forest around Puget Sound.

Monday, August 31, 2015. Aug 22-23 - BBC Pelagic Insanity. I guess we should be used to this by now. The BBC August overnight pelagic trip never really fails to produce. With a couple of epic trips in recent years, expectations were high for last weekend's excursion. Somehow we managed to exceed those expectations on many levels. I will leave the full-blown summary to trip leader Jeremiah Trimble, but here are some numbers for you in the meantime:. 2 Black-capped Petrel (white-faced type). Peter and Jere...

Shorebirder: Olympic Peninsula & Vancouver Island (June 23-24)

http://www.shorebirder.com/2015/07/olympic-peninsula-vancouver-island-june.html

Saturday, July 4, 2015. Olympic Peninsula and Vancouver Island (June 23-24). My plan for today was to bird around Ocean Shores (on the opposite side of Grays Harbor from Westport) for the morning, then leisurely make my way along the outer coast to Port Angeles for a 9pm ferry to Victoria Island, BC. Mule Deer 'likes' include long walks on the beach. About as good as I could do for a record shot of this morning's Ancient Murrelet. Heading north from Ocean Shores I gave myself a short tour around Quinault...

Saturday, July 18, 2015. 13 Jul - Cape Cod whales and birds. I spent this past Monday on Cape Cod and birded for a while with Tina Green. We took a mid-morning whale watch out of Provincetown, followed by scouring the tern flock at Hatches Harbor. And a few birds:. First summer Arctic Tern. Molting adult Black Tern. Monday, July 6, 2015. Misc birding, flight home (June 27-28). We all had a blast at the wedding last night. Not much sleep was had, which is a sign of a great time. I headed in the direction ...

Tuesday, December 30, 2014. Dec 27 and 28 - MA North Shore (Thayer's Gull ). From here we spent the rest of the day on Cape Ann, birding from Gloucester Harbor to Halibut Point. We drove to the end of the Jodrey Fish Pier to find a first cycle GLAUCOUS GULL standing in the lot among a few Herring Gulls. First cycle Glaucous Gull. First cycle "Kumlien's" Iceland Gull. Adult "Kumlien's" Iceland Gull. Next up was Niles Pond, another well-known gull magnet. There were no more than 100 individual gulls on...

Saturday, November 22, 2014. Is it too late for Cave Swallows? I have no idea how Cave Swallows did this past summer in the Texas/Oklahoma region. But I do know that we have had not had any. Decent Cave Swallow setup weather this month. Not surprisingly there have been zero eBird records of Cave Swallow from New England this autumn season. Current US weather on the morning of Nov 22 - a weak SW flow in the target area. Tuesday, November 18, 2014. Notes from Last Weekend (Nov 14-16). Among about a dozen H...

The Birder's Conundrum: A Sad Realization amid March Meh-ness

http://birdersconundrum.blogspot.com/2015/03/a-sad-realization-amid-march-meh-ness.html

Wednesday, March 11, 2015. A Sad Realization amid March Meh-ness. The landfill gulls are still hanging around, but not for long. Kiss winter and gulling goodbye. The dates of April 29-May 7, when read aloud, conjure up images of Prothonotary Warblers, Veerys (Veeries? Ah, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, I may miss you this spring. But it's not my fault, I promise. I'll be locked in my dorm room, wishing I was outdoors. But I ask not for your sympathy. I dream of a day when bird-obsessed college students like...
