Seamstress Guild 1640s

Wednesday, October 12, 2011. Quiet round here, isn't it. I've been being distracted by modern life this year, but there will be things forthcoming. Stand by for the Blue Wool Officer's Suit, doublet and breeches tailored to the client, involving fine-wool, white-linen lining, canvas, muslin, cotton batting and many yards of white linen thread to stitch it all together. Officer's shirt to go with it. And pewter buttons. Only not on the shirt, obviously. Thursday, March 24, 2011. Shirts, common and posh!

Seamstress Guild 1640s: Hand sewing for Absolute Beginners

http://www.seamstressguild1640s.blogspot.com/2009/10/hand-sewing-for-absolute-beginners.html

Tuesday, October 27, 2009. Hand sewing for Absolute Beginners. The assumption here is that you have never touched a needle, pin or thread in your life but want to start hand-sewing your new kit! I'll try to be clear, and to put in everything required but I've been sewing a long time so PLEASE tell me what I've left out or not described properly! THREAD: If you're going to the effort of hand-sewing your mid-C17th kit, then it makes sense to use linen thread if you can. I'll try and find some links to ...

It should lie a lot flatter across the back this way, although it isn't ever going to lie dead flat like a modern shirt - the fullness needs to be here to create the shape for the neckline. Seamstress Guild 1640s: Underarm gussets and sideseams

http://www.seamstressguild1640s.blogspot.com/2010/01/underarm-gussets-and-sideseams.html

Thursday, January 14, 2010. Underarm gussets and sideseams. A quick post, so please ask if it isn't clear - mainly photos to illustrate the last post, on underarm gussets and sideseam gussets. You put in the square underarm gussets sewn so that one side is seamed to the body-front immediately below the sleeve; the adjacent side is sewn to the sleeve-front; the next side is sewn to the sleeve-back and the final side is sewn to the body-back. You can see how the seamstress two centuries ago cleverly offset...

Seamstress Guild 1640s: Shirt/ Shift Part Two: Sleeves

http://www.seamstressguild1640s.blogspot.com/2009/11/shirt-shift-part-two-sleeves.html

Monday, November 23, 2009. Shirt/ Shift Part Two: Sleeves. Having cut out your pattern pieces, you now start actually making the thing! The link I gave before gives instructions which you can follow if you like. Mine are roughly the same, just in a slightly different order plus I don't cut any shaping for the neck-hole. I start with the sleeves. The seam is reversible, looks the same each side, and has no raw edges showing (raw edges are structurally weak). Fold it lengthways and pinch the fold at the sh...

Seamstress from Venus | A great site about sewing (and occasionally knitting)

A great site about sewing (and occasionally knitting). About…. ME! July 22, 2015. July 21, 2015. This dress started as a muslin (a first fitting) for my black everyday tank dress. I used the same staple knit dress as a base pattern, changing just about everything but the body shape. The jersey that I used didn’t have as much stretch as the original dress, so my version came out slightly tighter and shorter than what I’m accustomed to. On a side note, for those of you who may have ready my ABOUT… ME!

Travel, design and other musings. In search of the Kavaya Thuni. I first read about it in an article about the Parangi women of Fort Kochi. The Kavaya is derived from the Malaysian word Kebaya. It was the traditional dress of the Malaccan women that the Portugese brought over as wives – a sarong of sorts worn under a long flowery shirt. It was quite by accident that we started working with weavers from Kerala. My husband and I were at a riverside resort when the owner told us that there was….

Saturday, November 22, 2014. Simplicity 1254 Progress (and zipper clarification). I was finally able to order my fashion fabric (it's a royal purple wool from mood) so the motivation to sew up my muslin has finally arrived. Ok So the pattern originally has 3 lines along the center front seam. These are the solid purple lines on my muslin (I added the blue dashed- more on that later). From left to right we have the Center Front marking, the "fold" marking, and the zipper stitching line. My initial thought...
