Thank Your Teachers | seanmisen

https://seanmisen.wordpress.com/2014/07/24/thank-your-teachers

My life in Japan. July 24, 2014. A few weeks ago an ALT friend posted on Facebook asking for advice on how to deal with uncooperative homeroom teachers who do not actually team teach with him. We have all known these teachers. Some of them grade papers while the ALT tries to run the class, some stand or sit in the back of the classroom, starting confusedly at a copy of the lesson plan that they are supposed to be teaching. Winter Holidays in Japan | seanmisen

https://seanmisen.wordpress.com/2013/12/15/winter-holidays-in-japan

My life in Japan. Winter Holidays in Japan. Winter Holidays in Japan. December 15, 2013. A version of this post appears in the Palmer Sister City Newsletter this month. As I write this, Christmas is fast approaching, and even here in Japan, there are many reminders. Japan celebrates Christmas in the same way it celebrates halloween – as an excuse to have a party, eat a bit of unhealthy food, and a new way for businesses to advertise. Christmas is also all about fried chicken. At some point, it became...

Questions Kids Ask | seanmisen

https://seanmisen.wordpress.com/2014/08/22/questions-kids-ask

My life in Japan. August 22, 2014. Question from a 4th grader at lunch:. Um, in the place that you were born, like, how many of the people there have iPhones? Oh, ok. Thanks. Question from a junior high student:. Excuse me, may I ask you a question? How many Japanese words do you know? Ummm, five thousand. Ok, thank you. One thought on “ Questions Kids Ask. September 18, 2014 at 2:11 am. Seems like a reasonable question. Did you ever do any follow up research? Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Welcome to America | seanmisen

https://seanmisen.wordpress.com/2014/07/04/welcome-to-america

My life in Japan. July 4, 2014. When I flew back into the US this May, I had a rather odd interaction with the border control agent in Los Angeles. Here’s the content of our entire exchange. I’m confident that it is word for word, since I wrote it down immediately afterward:. Why were you in Japan? What do you do in Japan? When is your birthday? June 6th, 1984. Have you ever lived in New Haven, CT? Have you ever lived in New Haven, Connecticut? And if it was a legitimate question, what is the connection?

To The Equator: Singapore : The Adventures of J-Hat

http://j-hat.blogspot.com/2010/05/to-equator.html

The Adventures of J-Hat. John in Japan on the JET Programme. To The Equator: Singapore. Posted by John Nguyen. With the first hint of spring in the air and the cherry blossoms beginning to bloom, it’s the perfect time to take a step back and appreciate Japan for what it offers… five consecutive days of holidays and a chance to leave Japan and travel abroad. In other words, Golden Week is upon us once again! Last year took me on adventures throughout Hong Kong and China. Or spicy Malaysian mee goreng.

Drifting On Ice : The Adventures of J-Hat

http://j-hat.blogspot.com/2009/03/drifting-on-drift-ice.html

The Adventures of J-Hat. John in Japan on the JET Programme. Posted by John Nguyen. In the land of festivals and never ending things to see, there is always something going on. In Hokkaido - Japan's winter playground - we celebrate all things snow related by holding the country's largest and most famous snow festival (which is Yuki Matsuri. Apparently the Japanese do. I decided to see what the fuss was all about so, a few weekends ago, I headed out to Abashiri to view the Drift Ice for myself. On March 2...

Everybody Loves Ham Fighting : The Adventures of J-Hat

http://j-hat.blogspot.com/2010/03/everybody-loves-ham-fighting.html

The Adventures of J-Hat. John in Japan on the JET Programme. Everybody Loves Ham Fighting. Posted by John Nguyen. After missing two seasons, I was finally able to see my first Japanese baseball game! In Japan, they take their baseball seriously. Baseball is a serious sport. Sapporo’s baseball team is called the Nippon Ham Fighters. Notice the clever company advertising subtly inserted into the team name? As a bonus, everyone receives a free stick of ham from their sponsors upon entry! Each team has their...

http://j-hat.blogspot.com/2010/05/ocean-sand-tioman.html

The Adventures of J-Hat. John in Japan on the JET Programme. Ocean, Sand. Tioman. Posted by John Nguyen. Malaysia’s island life is worlds apart from the city life. Time moves at a different pace, there’s no rush, and everything is quieter and more laid-back. I experienced the same thing when I visited the outlying islands in Hong Kong. The contrast between Kowloon and Lamma, Singapore and Tioman is indescribable. Yubetsu, Hokkaido, Japan. Ocean, Sand. Tioman. To The Equator: Singapore.

Sunayu & Kusshie : The Adventures of J-Hat

http://j-hat.blogspot.com/2009/07/sunayu-kusshi.html

The Adventures of J-Hat. John in Japan on the JET Programme. Posted by John Nguyen. It's at a place called Sunayu, which means "hot sand", on the shore of Lake Kussharo, part of Akan National Park. Lake Kussharo is another caldera lake (like Lake Toya. We went there to see the local mascot, a loch ness-ish monster called Kusshi. Apparently there have been sightings of Kusshi in the lake, but most Japanese claim it was just a large trout. The truth? Yubetsu, Hokkaido, Japan. Team Marimo Adventures In Akan!

The Adventures of J-Hat: December 2009

http://j-hat.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

The Adventures of J-Hat. John in Japan on the JET Programme. Posted by John Nguyen. To me, "Christmas" means spending time with family. It means eating a Christmas dinner of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, veggies, and cranberry sauce. It means opening presents on New Years Eve after dinner. It means being in that all-encompassing festive atmosphere during the Christmas holidays and having warm memories of Christmas from my childhood. This being my first Christmas in Japan (I was in Vietnam.

The Adventures of J-Hat. John in Japan on the JET Programme. Bringing Halloween To Japan. Posted by John Nguyen. Instant ghost costume. It kept slipping and wasn't very easy to wear, so taking my laziness to new heights I took off the bed sheet, bundled it in my arms and said "I'm a ghost but it won't stay on," when I was asked what I was, which was still good enough to receive the candy! I had fooled the system. Ah, who knows, maybe I am still a kid. The Old Man Of Nikoroyama. Posted by John Nguyen.

my reflec(SEAN)s | in constant reverie…

In constant reverie…. August 17, 2015. Don’t torment me with this pain, for no reason. Why have you become a reason, for no reason? Time, tell my heart to stop this madness. Why is it intent on being insane, for no reason. I have already forgotten you. Foolish heart, don’t complicate this matter, for no reason. I did not mean to mention your name today. Your mention came up somehow, for no reason. I have no reason to meet with you. Why do I search for reasons, for no reason? June 28, 2015. May 15, 2015.

Dreamers of the Kingdom

Dreamers of the Kingdom. Thursday, September 25, 2014. Tied in with why move to City Heights). There is no reason for us to move at this point other than we feel that God is bringing us back to City Heights. It has certainly been a test for us in thinking about moving again and moving back to City Heights. We like to be comfortable and both moving and City Heights make us less comfortable. So why be less comfortable? Tied in with why not wait for a more ideal place where we could stay longer). Pregnant L...
