Abroad in Korea

Sunday, September 14, 2008. Korea's Thanksgiving celebration, sort of. Every year, Koreans celebrate Chuseok (추석), a harvest festival according to the lunar calendar. This full moon during the early autumn months means several things; it's a national holiday for Koreans, it's a time to go home and visit family and it's also a time to pay tribute to one's ancestors. It is also customary to clean the grave site sometime during the Chuseok holiday as a mark of respect for those who are interred there. M...

Abroad in Korea: This is how sports should be played . . .

http://seattletokorea.blogspot.com/2008/09/this-is-how-sports-should-be-played.html

Sunday, September 14, 2008. This is how sports should be played . . . More than one thousand blue shirts stormed onto the soccer field in the Olympic stadium which once hosted the 1988 summer Olympics. Flags waved and the multitudes of youth sang and chanted. No, this wasn’t a Democratic youth rally; it was the celebration following the two-day competition between Yonsei University and Korea University. Here are several photographs I took at the event:. Above are several of the cheerleaders who led the s...

Abroad in Korea: Ascending Seoul's tallest mountain

http://seattletokorea.blogspot.com/2008/08/ascending-seouls-tallest-mountain.html

Thursday, August 28, 2008. Ascending Seoul's tallest mountain. I ascended Seoul’s tallest mountain yesterday, sweating and panting as I finally stood next to the Korean flag planted at the mountain’s top. The peak is 836.5 meters from the base (about 2800 feet) and the view from the top overlooks all of northern Seoul. Rock on Andrew, rock on. Would you like to be an ex-patriot Husky with me? August 30, 2008 at 1:04 PM. Which mountain is this? Great blog by the way. Amazing photographs. Ascending Seouls ...

Abroad in Korea: Seoul nightlife

http://seattletokorea.blogspot.com/2008/08/seoul-nightlife.html

Sunday, August 31, 2008. School begins tomorrow, ending a week long adventure traipsing through Seoul's streets, bars, clubs, cafes and shops. I've watched legions of taxis swarm the streets as the subways stop running, the drivers hoping to earn a few bucks shuttling home the multitudes of unlucky youth. Groups of friends roam the streets, gallivanting from club to bar to club to bar again, and couples walk hand in hand, perhaps on their way to a bar or to one of Seoul's many late-night cafes. Korean bu...

Abroad in Korea: A guidebook to traveling

http://seattletokorea.blogspot.com/2008/08/guidebook-to-traveling.html

Friday, August 22, 2008. A guidebook to traveling. I am sitting in Seoul, Korea inside of the Beewon Guest House. So far, I've eaten one meal of Korean food with two other guests and I've toured Changdeokgung, a palace nearly right across the street from Beewon Guest House. I'll be here for four months and, apart from attending school, I'll be updating this blog with stories, photos and the occasional video element. Compare/contrast America and Korea. United States corporate presence in Korea. This is a ...

Abroad in Korea: Palaces, markets and fish that clean your feet

http://seattletokorea.blogspot.com/2008/08/palaces-markets-and-fish-that-clean.html

Tuesday, August 26, 2008. Palaces, markets and fish that clean your feet. A dozen mosquito bites later, one foot bath (with fish) and one currency incident later, I am settled into the dormitory at Yonsei University in Seoul. The mosquitoes here have seemingly targeted me and I’ve been one itchy mess until I picked up some soothing Korean medicine to assuage my numerous bites. If you ever come to Korea, bring bug repellant and use it liberally. If you’re interested in visiting, the tour costs only ...

Yet another distraction to my life. The ponderings of a graduate traveller. Tuesday, February 24, 2009. The streets of Myeongdong are arguably one big fashion store. Clothes, shoes and accessories are on sale at cheap-cheap prices without having to step foot in a shop. But - and I've griped about this before - where are the size labels? Where are the dressing rooms? How do you know what you're buying is going to look as good on you as it does on the hanger? Bring on Forever 21. We were not disappointed.

Yet another distraction to my life. The ponderings of a graduate traveller. Sunday, February 15, 2009. N the interests of completion of the blog I post it now - unedited from what I originally wrote - intended as a reminder of the various thoughts I've had over the year. Yet another distraction to my life. The ponderings of a graduate traveller. Thursday, July 31, 2008. West Sea Isles: Getting Away From It All. Tiring of the rain in Seoul, following a reliable Google forecast for further showers in Incheon, that's where we headed on Tuesday afternoon. Full to the brim with pseudo-Chinese food (I hear that the popular 'Chinese' dish jajangmyun. Maybe this just isn't a prime holiday spot, but that works for me. The Grecian journey of a University of Washington journalism student. Tuesday, August 26, 2008. The island of Aegina. I am sitting underneath an olive tree, watching two snails lounge on a crumbling stucco wall. I am wondering how I fell in love with Greece so fast. A man rumbles by me on a silver scooter. It was his third time around the block. A bus from Athens to the island of Evia and the village of Vitola. My heart is breaking at this unabashed love. I miss you all. Vitola, the island of Evia. The Grecian journey of a University of Washington journalism student. Monday, August 18, 2008. In Athens: Blog Two. Words often fail me when I speak, but rarely do words fail me when I write. Tonight is an exception. For once, words do not suffice. I received a lesson on Greece and its burgeoning civil society while sipping a cold, sweet frappe through a straw in Syntagma Square. Hi Erinn, Thanks so much for sharing your travels with us. I love all the descriptions of your experiences. You left o...These...

http://ahuskysodyssey.blogspot.com/2008/08/in-athens-blog-one.html

The Grecian journey of a University of Washington journalism student. Monday, August 18, 2008. In Athens: Blog One. The moon was setting when I left my apartment for the airport. It was yellow and gauzy, wrapped in dark clouds. The city looked like one of those pop-up postcards, cut sharply against a muted sky. Seattle was as sleepy as I was. The few places operating seemed almost embarrassed to be up so early, like children trying so hard to be quiet in the wee hours of Christmas morning. It was only 15...

Eric and Devyn in Jerusalem

Eric and Devyn in Jerusalem. Wednesday, April 9, 2014. Just about one week after McKenzie left, our good friend from Seattle, Theresa, arrived- and we could not have been more excited! The great thing about going to the Dome of the Rock at its 12:30 opening, is that you are normally starving after touring around and Abu Shukri is just around the corner. Hummus and falafel here never disappoints. After a fairly low-key day of only taking in one tourist site, the next day we were ready to venture out to th...
