Wednesday, April 2, 2014. Western Massachusetts Pink-footed Goose. Sightings in the Northeast have been occurring with increasing frequency since the late 1990s. A winter vagrant to eastern Canada and northeastern U.S., its nesting range is eastern Greenland, Iceland and Svalbard. Normal winter range is Great Britain, the Netherlands and Denmark. Increased vagrancy to North America has been attributed to the population having undergone a 10 fold increase over the past 50 years. View my complete profile.

Saturday, December 13, 2014. The second Prairie Falcon of this year was discovered along Otter Creek Road in Addison on Tuesday, December 9 by Rodney Olsen. Another, quite possibly the same bird but as yet not confirmed, was spotted nearly a year ago (January 1) in the vicinity of Gage Road. Saturday, February 8, 2014. Curing the Midwinter Birding Doldrums. One of my quests was the federally endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker, a keystone species of mature longleaf pine forests. Luckily I succeeded in finding at least two by keeping a close watch on a clump of marked nesting trees observable from the road and listening for any vocalizations. Sightings listed for the Southeastern Vermont Audubon Society. Monday, August 10, 2015. BIRD NOTES} August 10, 2015. I recently saw a male Scarlet Tanager. And another just off VT 100 in Wardsboro later in the week. I didn't realize there was an effort to locate whip-poor-wills. So had not reported that in June I heard a Whip-poor-will. I saw a female. Common Merganser with 7 young ones. They went down the side, under the covered bridge in Dummerston then spread out to fish in the deeper water downstream.

Today we birded at the North Springfield Reservoir, there's a variety of spots to explore with lots of trails. There's over 1300 acres of forest, field, wetland and two lakes. At the north end, in a pine tree, a pair of bald eagles had been nesting for a few years. But in late winter, a pair of great horned owls stole their nest! Acronym for: Biron's Images Russo's Descriptions. Tuesday, May 12, 2015. Last Saturday, Gerry and I joined the southeastern Audubon group. For a warbler walk led by Richard Foye. We walked along the Fort Hill Rail Trail, aka the Hinsdale setbacks, in New Hampshire. It's a great spot for migrating birds along the Connecticut River. Richard telling the group about the bird we're hearing - now we need to find it! Warblers are always high in the trees! A very good find was this singing, yellow-throated vireo.

Sunday, March 23, 2014. Today six Rusty Blackbirds were observed and digiscoped on Old Connecticut River Road in Springfield, Vermont. These were in a flock of 10 Red-winged Blackbirds and four Common Grackles. Is a citizen science effort to engage birders in seeking out "rusties" and to submit their observations on-line.
