Acronym for: Biron's Images Russo's Descriptions. Friday, May 22, 2015. Great horned owl and owlet. Today we birded at the North Springfield Reservoir, there's a variety of spots to explore with lots of trails. There's over 1300 acres of forest, field, wetland and two lakes. At the north end, in a pine tree, a pair of bald eagles had been nesting for a few years. But in late winter, a pair of great horned owls stole their nest! I'm not sure if the bald eagles found a new spot in the area or not. For a wa...

http://bironandrussobirds.blogspot.com/2015/03/bohemian-waxwings.html
Acronym for: Biron's Images Russo's Descriptions. Saturday, March 14, 2015. It was four years ago that we had the last big invasion of Bohemian Waxwings from the north. Reports were coming in on eBird of sightings north of here, you could see their movement as the large flocks continued southward in search of food. Waxwings get their name from the waxy red secretions found on the tips of the feathers. The function is not known, but they may help attract mates. Gerry Biron and JoAnne Russo.

Every winter, flocks of horned larks and snow buntings show up on cornfields in our area. Our local Agway feed store always puts seeds out behind the store in Walpole, New Hampshire. This winter at least three lapland longspurs have been associated with the flocks of horned larks. You can see the tiny horns on the horned lark on the right in this picture. This bird ...

http://bironandrussobirds.blogspot.com/2015/05/warbler-walk.html
Acronym for: Biron's Images Russo's Descriptions. Tuesday, May 12, 2015. Last Saturday, Gerry and I joined the southeastern Audubon group. For a warbler walk led by Richard Foye. We walked along the Fort Hill Rail Trail, aka the Hinsdale setbacks, in New Hampshire. It's a great spot for migrating birds along the Connecticut River. Richard telling the group about the bird we're hearing - now we need to find it! Warblers are always high in the trees! A very good find was this singing, yellow-throated vireo.

Acronym for: Biron's Images Russo's Descriptions. Wednesday, February 26, 2014. Portland Maine Coast - Part 2. The rocky coast of Maine! Ron pointing something out! With the rolling waves along the coast, it wasn't hard to see a bird and then lose it behind a wave. Then it's a matter of pointing to something and saying "see that blue buoy, it's right of that" or "left of that raft of eiders" or "just beyond that furthest rock". A good way to hone your "where's that bird" skills! Tuesday, February 25, 2014.

Acronym for: Biron's Images Russo's Descriptions. Monday, May 26, 2014. While scanning the marshes at Herrick's Cove in Bellows Falls, I saw a bittern with white feathers! I realized he was doing a courtship display for the female! The pictures were taken through my spotting scope with my Canon PowerShot, so the quality is not good. But I read on the Audubon website that "the bittern has a remarkable, though rarely seen, courtship display" so I decided to share the pictures anyway. Thursday, May 22, 2014.

Acronym for: Biron's Images Russo's Descriptions. Saturday, January 25, 2014. Feeders full of black-oil sunflower seeds and squares of suet are attracting lots of birds this winter. But these robins rather dine on fruit and berries. Purple finches love our feeding stations and also enjoy the seeds of staghorn sumac. We saw huge flocks of robin at Herrick's Cove in Bellows Falls on one sunny and not so cold day, stripping the crabapple trees of all the berries. No seeds or berries for raptors! Whenever a ...
