At Datong and the region are many sites of historical interest, such as the Huayan Monastery, the Shanhua Monastery, the Nine Dragon Screen and some further the Hanging Temple. 16 km west of Datong are the Grottoes of Yungang, which are part of the Unesco World Heritage List.
