Musings on Metal, Wanderings with Wood. Blacker Table Top Inlay. May 31, 2015. I just finished the inlay on the top of the Blacker Serving table I’m making. This went really smoothly. It’s not perfect, but it’s plenty good enough. I’m pleased that I was able to do all the processes end-to-end without any screw ups or stress. A good day in the shop. Inlay in original Blacker dining table. As on the legs, I’m using the Chevalet to cut out the petals, I’m more comfortable with that than using a ...The shell...

Dust (not) In the Wind | Little Good Pieces

There's no scrap wood, just little good pieces. Back in the Saddle Again! Frankenstein’s Dust Port →. Dust (not) In the Wind. October 14, 2012. Hand tools, of course, are a different animal entirely. Dust collection there primarily involves a broom and dust pan. Simple. However, a couple of factors have emerged that changed my approach to these things. The other is shop kittens. When they’re young, they see every soft pile of absorbent material as a litter box. Why am I showing a picture of the hose?

Tool Chest | McGlynn on Making

Musings on Metal, Wanderings with Wood. Click here for all related posts on making this project). Completed chest ready for finish. Tool chest for my son, nailed together out of pine. Tails Cut, ready to transfer the pins. In retrospect, I’m surprised I could build this on the workbench I was using at the time. That workbench was terrible. It wiggled around and the vises wouldn’t hold a board at all. I had to try and saw in time with the wiggles. Bottom boards nailed on. On the inside I made a simple saw...

Woodworking Adventures in a Small Space. Lessons From the First Year: A Woodworker’s Notebook. The Mystery Project: The Great Unveiling. I had hoped to blog more thoroughly on the construction, but it wasn’t to be. Work, travel, a minor injury, the holidays, and flu season all conspired against me. I was able to take some construction photos and I’ll attempt to work backwards as I can. The cabinet is 28″ x 40″ x 5″. The casework is walnut, with the two maple panels. Woodworking Adventures in a Small Space. Lessons From the First Year: A Woodworker’s Notebook. When Humidity is Good. I may catch hell from some people about this post. It’s predictable. After the jewelry cabinet. Yes, I smoke the occasional good cigar. (NOT cheezmo cheap stinkers.) Yes, I know I probably shouldn’t, but something else is far more likely to kill me before that does (like inhaling wood dust… more on that to follow). Imagine my surprise when this was how it came out of the planer. 8211; som...

Musings on Metal, Wanderings with Wood. Click here to see all posts on this project). This was a relatively quick project from the Paul Sellers woodworking book. The point was to make this with all hand tools. I learned a little about carving, including that I don’t really have a good handle on sharpening carving tools. That seems weird, because I can put a good edge on planes and regular chisels. Glue Up The Seat Blank. I figure out how to sharpen my gouges. Once the seat was assembled and glued up I pa...

Musings on Metal, Wanderings with Wood. Click here to see all the posts on this topic). As it turned out, a wall-hiung cabinet met my needs better, and in an interesting turn of events I built it almost without using any hand tools. I did “cheat” and use hand tools to dovetail the drawers. Anyway, it all started with a SketchUp model. Tool cabinet design — without the doors. One door with a coat of shellac, the main body of the cabinet is in the background. The drawers were great dovetailing practice, ma...

Musings on Metal, Wanderings with Wood. Click here for all posts on building these sconces. Completed “Blacker Sconce”. I had two false starts on these, the first with the scale of the parts amazingly too small. I found one of the early mockups recently and had to laugh at how small it was. That’s one of the things that I’d change about the “final” version if (when? I make these again…they should still be a skosh larger. Early mockup of parts for the sconce body…waaaaay too small! I made patterns for the...

Musings on Metal, Wanderings with Wood. Newer posts →. May 4, 2015. The next step on the Blacker table has me worried. It’s the inlay on the legs. Now that I have the joinery done and fitting well, the leg ends shaped and everything otherwise ready to assemble it’s nice to know I have a fresh opportunity to screw things up. I’ve done inlay exactly once before,. Pattern for four leaves cut out. I sawed these out on the Marquetry Chevalet, which worked OK, although I’m not sure that’s the best ...Next up w...
