Code of conduct | Silverclear
https://silverclear.wordpress.com/2013/09/09/code-of-conduct
The Evening News today has a story about Edinburgh Councillor Cammy Day. Hoping to introduce a charter of standards expected of private landlords. I’m in favour of a charter, but many in the industry have come out in response saying they’re not in favour, even though they want to raise standards. I’d like to see a private rented sector in Edinburgh where standards are upheld, people live safely and securely, while landlords and their agents are able to trust tenants to look after their properties&#...
Housing market behaviour | Silverclear
https://silverclear.wordpress.com/2013/09/13/housing-market-behaviour
I am getting a bit tired of hearing news reports. That say “the housing market is recovering” or “housing market does XYZ”. There is a market and the emergent behaviour. Here in Edinburgh I have friends who are bidding on properties that are selling in as little as a fortnight. These are properties such as colonies. Or family sized homes in the city – the key point being there is a limited number of these and the buyers have the means to bid higher. How do you describe the market in Edinburgh? Click to s...

Last night which is a really good commentary with views from all sides. Short cut to knowledge! I feel passionate about the need for longer term tenancies for people who want to make a home and require security of tenure in their rented property. So passionate that I’ve set up a whole business dedicated to achieving it! I would love to see ...

A landlord has been ordered to pay his tenants three times their original deposit. Because he didn’t place their deposit in one of the deposit schemes. For those reading who aren’t aware, all deposits must be held by one of the deposit protection schemes in Scotland. Currently these are:. Letting Protection Service Scotland. My experience has been that it’s a simple and easy process. Landlords avoiding using a deposit scheme are not doing it because it’s difficult or costly. In other areas of the market,...

The Courtyard Gardener: April 2012
http://www.thecourtyardgardener.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
A novice gardener attempts to create a green oasis in a city courtyard. Monday, 30 April 2012. A match made in heaven: pulmonaria and the hairy footed flower bee. During these last few wild wet weekends I’ve been sorting through some of my photos from March, trying to remember what sunshine and warmth felt like! One of the joys of our garden in March is the flowering of the pulmonaria (still going strong despite the drenching), and with that the arrival of the hairy footed flower bees. So I transplanted ...

A novice gardener attempts to create a green oasis in a city courtyard. Saturday, 16 June 2012. London 2012: a garden city. It’s already been a busy old year for gardening in London, and promises to continue in the same vein. A couple of weeks ago we all had a 4 day weekend to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee: including of course the river pageant, which I popped down to Wapping to see pass by. I’m really looking forward to it: the sport and spectacle of course, but also seeing the Olympic Park. The Fringe ...

A novice gardener attempts to create a green oasis in a city courtyard. Tuesday, 28 February 2012. Pruning our old overgrown quince tree. As I reported in a previous post. As you can imagine I’ve been doing a lot of reading on fungal infections of fruit trees and what to do about them. My resulting plan is:. Remove all infected fruit and leaves from the tree (in retrospect I can remember seeing some mummified fruit on the tree when we moved in last year). The drawing below shows the types of larger branc...
The Courtyard Gardener: March 2012

A novice gardener attempts to create a green oasis in a city courtyard. Thursday, 29 March 2012. Enjoying the casualties of a garden tidy. Lots of gardening last weekend (and lots of posts to catch up on when the weather worsens! Links to this post. Friday, 9 March 2012. Back to the loppers . this time the laurel's for the chop. Another fortnight gone, and the council have emptied the brown bin again, leaving space for more chopping. But what to chop? Isn’t the only thing mouldering. In our front garden.
The Courtyard Gardener: Choosing climbers for a north facing fence

A novice gardener attempts to create a green oasis in a city courtyard. Saturday, 28 April 2012. Choosing climbers for a north facing fence. If you look carefully at the photos in my previous post. You will see an exciting new addition to the garden – planting holes! Golden Hop ( Humulus lupulus 'Aureus'). Climbing Hydrangea (Hydrangea Anomala Petiolaris). Morello Cherry ( Prunus cerasus Morello). It hadn’t initially occurred to me that I would be able to grow something productive in such a small s...
The Courtyard Gardener: The single snowdrop: waiting for spring bulbs

A novice gardener attempts to create a green oasis in a city courtyard. Friday, 24 February 2012. The single snowdrop: waiting for spring bulbs. Well, not quite single . but it has to be said that my new spring bulb border looks a little more like the plan version. Than I had hoped (the fact I only drew a handful of snowdrops was supposed to be purely illustrative! It just goes to show you need a lot of bulbs to make any impact. 24 February 2012 at 13:26. Oh, and your hellebore is beautiful! Well, if one...
The Courtyard Gardener: May 2012
http://www.thecourtyardgardener.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
A novice gardener attempts to create a green oasis in a city courtyard. Friday, 4 May 2012. April showers: why are we still in a drought? In most of the South of England and the Midlands we are in a drought: water stocks are low, and in many water supply areas the use of hosepipes has been banned since the end of a very dry March. Luckily, we British are obsessed with the weather, and data on rainfall is not at all difficult to come by from the Met Office. You can see that winter rainfall really has been...
