The Self-Reliant Homestead: Progress on the Cabin!
http://selfrelianthomestead.blogspot.com/2014/11/progress-on-cabin.html
Living Life on the Small Place. Progress on the Cabin! The past couple of days have been hectic ones. My friend for whom I work part-time brought his crew over and they did the lion's share of work on erecting our cabin. I helped where needed, fetched lumber, held the 'dumb end' of the tape measure, cut some boards, etc. Friday was cold, windy, and wet.a fairly miserable day, but the guys plugged away throughout the day. The wall framing went quickly with all hands assisting. Today, the roof went on.

Rural Revolution: Progress on projects
http://www.rural-revolution.com/2015/08/progress-on-projects.html
In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Friday, August 7, 2015. While I was in Portland a couple weeks ago, Don was incredibly busy. Not only do we still have large outstanding orders for tankards. But there are endless projects we want to accomplish before the snow flies. In other words, time's a-wastin'. Gotta get some stuff done. We've had a freaky weird summer, much hotter and drier than normal, and all the crops are accelerated. Farmers were cutting hay in June rather...

Rural Revolution: Heeeeere's Lucy!
http://www.rural-revolution.com/2015/02/heeeeeres-lucy.html
In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Sunday, February 8, 2015. Many of you remember last summer when we had a sweet little red heifer calf born. Because we couldn't think of a name for her, all of you lovely readers chimed in with dozens of suggestions. We finally chose "Lucy" since, of course, she's a red-head. Lucy is now seven months old and darling. True to the nature of calves, she's become quite an escape artist. Look at that belly! Posted by Patrice Lewis. February 8...

The Self-Reliant Homestead: Check out the latest issue of Backwoods Home Magazine!
http://selfrelianthomestead.blogspot.com/2015/06/check-out-latest-issue-of-backwoods.html
Living Life on the Small Place. Check out the latest issue of Backwoods Home Magazine! Friends, I've been writing for Backwoods Home Magazine for, well, since they and I were a lot younger! They've been kind enough to publish dozens and dozens of my articles over the years. That writing was the impetus for compiling, editing, expanding, and adding to create the book "The Self-Reliant Homestead". In their latest issue, they have printed an article I recently submitted on the building of our off-grid cabin!

The Self-Reliant Homestead: A Great Weekend!
http://selfrelianthomestead.blogspot.com/2014/10/a-great-weekend.html
Living Life on the Small Place. This ladder stand is in some prime white-tailed deer habitat. Yesterday, Patti and I spent some time shooting her revolver. It's a little snub-nosed revolver in .38 Special caliber. It's quite manageable for her, although she said the trigger pull is a bit rough. She did very well with it, slaying the cardboard box at which she was shooting. We'll be doing some more practicing with it soon. It was time well spent. Shooting practice went well! Rural Revolution: Building feed boxes
http://www.rural-revolution.com/2014/10/building-feed-boxes.html
In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Wednesday, October 8, 2014. Ever since Don built the awning. On our barn last year, he's had another project in mind: to build feed boxes for the livestock. Before we had the barn built. We fed the cattle in makeshift feed bins that didn't work well. Dominant animals pushed lower animals out of the way; and hay was wasted like crazy as the animals pulled it out of the boxes and onto the ground where it was trampled and soiled. It was a s...

Rural Revolution: Hoarding
http://www.rural-revolution.com/2010/08/hoarding.html
In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Wednesday, August 18, 2010. I have a pet peeve. I hate the word “hoarding.”. Let me be more specific: I hate the term “hoarding” as applied toward Preppers. Hoarding implies that by buying some extra bottles of shampoo, we are doing so at the expense of others. It implies that we are somehow wrong. That by ramping up our own food storage, we are causing others to go hungry. To prepare for future shortages. Most just choose. I clearly rem...

The Self-Reliant Homestead
http://selfrelianthomestead.blogspot.com/2014/10/here-in-southern-indiana-were-getting.html
Living Life on the Small Place. Here in Southern Indiana, we're getting ready for deer season. Every year, we look forward to killing and preserving some of the best meat that is available! We have a couple of trail cams in place and some deer stands erected as a part of our preparations. Deer jerky in our homemade food dryer. This year's project yielded several bags of tasty jerky. We will take some of it with us as we head out to fill the freezer again this November. October 16, 2014 at 8:36 PM. Of The...

The Self-Reliant Homestead: Drying Some Pears
http://selfrelianthomestead.blogspot.com/2014/10/drying-some-pears.html
Living Life on the Small Place. The old pears trees have a bumper crop this year. We stopped and picked up a 5-gallon bucket full the other afternoon. These pears are Keiffers, an old homestead variety. I am attaching a link to a site I found that can give you more information on the fruit: http:/ www.ediblecommunities.com/louisville/august-september-2014/in-the-garden-key-to-tasty-kieffer-pears-chillin.htm.
