Singing under the Southern Cross. A peek into the travels, triumphs, trials, and tunes of a Peace Corps volunteer in Mozambique. Saturday, May 26, 2012. Managing Meetings in Mozambique. Good day, America! How is it going? As you all get ready to embrace the wonderful summer months, our school year is pretty much smack-dab half way done, and the time continues to feel like it’s moving faster and faster! So what if every other person left their house on time and is ready to go? If he is not there, the meet...

Singing under the Southern Cross. A peek into the travels, triumphs, trials, and tunes of a Peace Corps volunteer in Mozambique. Saturday, July 21, 2012. June, July, and Jogos! Hope you are all enjoying a beautiful summer State-side. From what I have heard, it has been rather hot! Mid-June I heard my phone ring for the first time in Kaunda- a very sweet sound to hear! Also in June, I was able to host the first real soccer game with my girls in Kaunda. I received the invitation from a neighboring scho...

Singing under the Southern Cross. A peek into the travels, triumphs, trials, and tunes of a Peace Corps volunteer in Mozambique. Friday, October 21, 2011. Teacher's Day, Taste Labs, and T-he end. Hello, friends and family! Hope all is going well back home. As the weather turns colder on that side of the world, it is heating right up over here. Back to the days of sweat, cold baths, and acne. So excited! Wow, did that go quickly! So what has been going on? Since no food or drink was around, the day was no...

Life in Moz: June 2012

Saturday, June 30, 2012. 8221; or “I can’t believe I have to stay here until December 15 and other people are leaving November 8. 8221; Anyways, last week we finally got word via email our dates. I was at home alone when I opened the email on my blackberry. Immediately, I saw Helen’s name (she’s COSing November 8. 8211; the first week and thus the best week). I rapidly scrolled down, hoping my name wasn’t far behind. And it wasn’t! I COS during the 2. Week, on November 15. With a great group of friends!

Michelle in Mozambique: Nothing's easy

http://michelleinmozambique.blogspot.com/2012/09/nothings-easy.html

Wednesday, September 19, 2012. One chore that I absolutely dread here is getting my gas tank filled. I use a gas tank for cooking in my house and it runs out about once every 6 months. When that last bit of gas comes out and the stove stops working it's a sad moment since I know that I'll have to get it filled. 150 mets which is BLASPHEMY! The guy just stood there! Anyway, he finally went off and I got in the car, a little shaky from my recent encounter. Unfortunately this isn't the end of the story.

Michelle in Mozambique: December 2011

http://michelleinmozambique.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, December 13, 2011. Things I can't wait to do in 72 hours. Things I plan to do in the United States while I am home:. Use a washing machine and dryer! Heat up some food in a microwave. Take a long, hot shower. Go skiing—pray for snow for me! Dry my hair with a hair dryer. Wash dishes in a sink with running water, or even better in a dishwasher. Eat ice cream (I'm not going to go farther into other foods that I'm craving because this list could go on forever). Go to the movies! Most volunteers don...

Michelle in Mozambique: JUNTOS WORKSHOP 2012

http://michelleinmozambique.blogspot.com/2012/08/juntos-workshop-2012.html

Wednesday, August 15, 2012. JUNTOS workshops happened in June and July. I was fortunate enough to be able to work and help out with two workshops, one in Gaza province and one in Maputo province. At each conference participants from 5-6 local JUNTOS groups were invited to participate. At the Gaza conference we had 8 participants from each group, 5 facilitators, a tech trainer, and an enthusiastic group of volunteers present. The tech trainer was wonderful in terms of technical experience. The kids had a ...

Life in Moz: Things to “soak up”……

http://audrey-in-africa.blogspot.com/2012/11/things-to-soak-up.html

Friday, November 9, 2012. Things to “soak up”……. Walking to the market this morning, I made a conscious effort to notice as many things about my village as I could that I don’t want to forget. The sticks meticulously pounded into the hard dirt to form a simple fence around a house or a tree. The fact that piglets are probably some of the cutest animals that will quickly turn into the ugliest grown ones. The packs of half clothed criancas. The primary school kids in their blue uniforms, carrying a 5-liter...

Michelle in Mozambique: Daily Challenges

http://michelleinmozambique.blogspot.com/2012/08/daily-challenges.html

Wednesday, August 15, 2012. Yesterday, I was headed into Xai-Xai on a chapa and an Asian man entered at one point on the way. There are a good number of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean people here working in Mozambique. After about 15 minutes I realized that a man in the front row was trying to talk to him and basically harassing him in the process: “Hey China! Why you have no car? In China car cost 2 dolla! 8221; I realized after a bit that this man also didn’t speak any Portuguese. It is spoken within Fra...

Friday, May 25, 2012. The Adorable Children of Mozambique. These are mostly pictures of Francelino's brothers, sisters, and cousins, but the kids here are just so cute and love having their pictures taken! I figured everyone would enjoy these. Lately things have been going well with work here, however I can't help but be constantly reminded of how the simplest tasks can be so complicated here! Since then it has worked well! It makes things so much easier! It's a lot of work, but it should be really fun!

Singing Under the Moon

Singing Under the Moon. The ramblings and reflections of an aspiring writer. Tuesday, 15 October 2013. October is racing by and the thought of November approaching is leaving me feeling both eagerly excited and heart-stoppingly terrified! Naturally, being a somewhat obsessive planner, I have decided to do everything I can to prepare myself. This is how I am going about it:. Getting other obligations out of the way. For me this means:. Organising the writing environment. Building a support structure.
