Grade 8 Girls Basketball. A New Season Begins. The Grade 8 Girls program is the entry level to a very exciting journey of skill development, team awareness, and competitive play. While substantial in its own right, it serves as a great starting point that allows players to seamlessly enter the world of high school athletics. We believe that all of that starts right here in Grade 8, and it’s our goal to accomplish a number of very important things.

The first try-out practice for the Grade 8 Girls basketball program was held Friday, with over twenty girls showing up for 90 minutes of skill assessment drills. The drills are designed to evaluate a player's development in certain core areas of the game, as well as assess a player's ability to follow instructions and execute in a manner consistent with those instructions. And so, welcome to SJCHS basketball.

Steve Jones has been coaching school teams in various sports for twenty years, but will admit to having a decided preference for basketball. And over that time, Jones' teams have acquitted themselves rather well, with five appearances in the finals and two championships at the Grade 8 level. Since coming over to St. Joe's in 2007, Mr. Jones has coached the Junior Girl Jaguars for two seasons, notching a UOVHSAA "A" Division championship in 2008 to go along with a trip to EOSSAA.

The full squad participated in a practice /scrimmage February 10th, and the results were very encouraging in many areas, but still revealed some areas that need to be worked on. On Wednesday, as part of Orientation 2010, we played a collection of grade 9 girls, some of whom played Junior basketball last year, and some who qualified for Junior, but decided to wait for their second year to try out for the team. To everyone involved, well done! Practice on Monday, February 15, 2010.

Maybe the best word to describe the first match-up between the Central Centurions and St. Joseph’s Jaguars in Grade 8 Girls basketball play Friday at Central, where two evenly-matched teams slugged it out, before Central took a 34-30 final score in their favour. What a difference a minute makes! That’s about all the time it took for the Walther Zadow Wildcats to turn a 14-14 tie into a 20-14 lead in quarter-final action versus our very own. 8217;s Jaguars in the annual girls’ tournament held today at St. Joe’s. Zadow eventually took the contest 22-16, and went on to handily defeat fellow top-four seeds McNab and Cobden to take the championship honours for the day.
