Following the footsteps of previous authors, Bibb incorporates religion, the travel narrative, autobiography, and textual mediation into his narrative. By using these specific elements in his work, Bibb took part in a tradition of writing for the freedom of the bonded and the promotion of the abolition of slavery. Transcripts of 2,000 interviews, from 17 states, were then compiled by the Library of Congress. In 1972, George Rawick assembled the Library's collection (over 10,000 typescript pages) in The American Slave: A Composite Autobiography. In 1997, the collection was indexed by Howard Potts for A Comprehensive Name Index for The American Slave.
