Website is no longer available. Between 1936 and 1938, the WPA Federal Writers' Project hired a number of field workers to collect the life histories of former slaves. Transcripts of 2,000 interviews, from 17 states, were then compiled by the Library of Congress. In 1972, George Rawick assembled the Library's collection (over 10,000 typescript pages) in The American Slave: A Composite Autobiography. In 1997, the collection was indexed by Howard Potts for A Comprehensive Name Index for The American Slave.
