Torben is the Danish derivative of the Norwegian Torbjörn and means Tor’s (Thor) bear. Tor is the god of thunder in Norse mythology. When we named Torben we wanted a Norwegian name, but also wanted something pronounceable by English speakers. We liked Torbjörn but decided that the Danish derivative would be easier to pronounce so we went with Torben. Wednesday, October 07, 2009. Posted by Cecilie @ 9:53 PM. Out of the mouths of babes.
