South by Far East. A blog about my life in China. Update from China →. Rambling on Russia: Museums, Smiling, and our Babushka in Saint Petersburg. Some disjointed thoughts on Saint Petersburg and what I found there. How exactly do you say. And who messed up all the Ns? The hostel was in the center of the city. It was four flights up a solid but crumbling concrete staircase. Or you could take the rickety elevator, if you don’t value your life. Our hostel. Babushka is the little pile on the far left. That&...

South by Far East. A blog about my life in China. So far, we’ve gone to some great places: a cave housing a giant Buddha, ice caves with 10,000-year-old ice sheets, small villages, a small mountain top, and a theme park, just to name a few. Or the foreigners who had just arrived. The people they called promptly showed up in trucks and on mopeds. An ancient woman passed by me looking distraught. I smiled at her and offered my best. The pièce de résistance. For me, however, was the deer wine. “Wi...An incr...

South by Far East. A blog about my life in China. Newer posts →. A Teacher’s Ramblings. I’m now in the almost-full swing of classes. Let’s call it a three-quarter swing. And what I said about being a marketing tool awhile back? Hear No Evil. See No Evil. Speak No Evil. Written yesterday: August 28. Last night I was drunk. We went to a pub-style restaurant called Three Monkeys. I say pub-style, because everything here is. 8220;How is it owning a business in China? 8220;What, with regulations? Real jello&#...

Books and a Backpack. High above Granada : Lookout points. February 1, 2014. For the first trip of the new year, I hit up Granada with a fellow auxiliar for a weekend trip to close out our Christmas break. Books and a Backpack. Book Club: January / The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. February 7, 2015. February 7, 2015. Let’s kick off the new year in a literary fashion by checking out this month’s book club pick. I chose this month’s read (for the first time! And it was “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot. Choosing a non-fiction book was an out of the norm choice for myself and the club so it was a bit of a shake up. 3) When the doctor of the patient, Mr. Moore, lied to him about ...

Books and a Backpack. Book Club / January : “Too Much Happiness” Alice Munro. January 29, 2014. Click the photo to see my review on Goodreads. Well folks, I’ve finally found every book lover’s dream right here in my home of Madrid, Spain. That’s right- a book club! My thoughts: I didn’t like it. Don’t be deceived by the title and let yourself think that these stories will be happy-they are not! I found most endings left wide open for interpretation as to the continuation of the character’s life but...

Evaluating what I want in Spain – Books and a Backpack
https://booksandabackpack.wordpress.com/2013/11/11/evaluating-what-i-want-in-spain
Books and a Backpack. Evaluating what I want in Spain. November 11, 2013. Sure, I could jet set off to a different country on the weekends if I wanted since Europe is so easily accessible by cheap flights but now I find myself leaning more towards the idea of spending weekends throughout Spain and truly getting to know the country that I am calling home for now. Hanging out on a sunny Saturday by the lake in Retiro. My co-worker Elle and I all pumped up for Halloween at high school! 8221; and wrote down ...

Books and a Backpack. Getting a Spanish visa in Houston and other circus acts. October 24, 2013. If you’re going to move to Spain as an auxiliar (or as a study abroad student), there’s a couple hoops to jump through first and a few of those may be flaming. One of the biggest hurdles to get over is the visa (a stamp/sticker that is put in your passport showing that you can stay in the country for 90-180 days depending on which one you get.). You need approximately this much money. Nowadays, aren’t w...

Books and a Backpack. Hooray it’s Turkey Day! December 6, 2013. It’s Thanksgiving, y’all! This was my first major holiday in Spain to have missed with my family. Christmas markets of Madrid – Books and a Backpack
https://booksandabackpack.wordpress.com/2013/12/20/christmas-markets-of-madrid
Books and a Backpack. Christmas markets of Madrid. December 20, 2013. It’s Christmas time now and Madrid has gone all out to celebrate the holiday! The city center, Puerta del Sol, is all decked out with a 15-20 meter high Christmas tree and the streets branching out from the center each have their own set of lights suspended above the road and often lead off to cute little Christmas markets. I’ve personally counted 4 Christmas trees each breaking the 15 meter height and are all totally gorgeous! There i...

https://booksandabackpack.wordpress.com/2014/02/10/street-art-in-spain
Books and a Backpack. Street Art in Spain. February 10, 2014. Spain has no shortage of world class art, especially here in the capital city, Madrid. The art triangle (Museos del Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen) is top notch and visitors come from all over the world to see them and the priceless works of art within them. I’ve been to all three and can certainly attest to their high quality but some of my favorite art in Spain has been the street art! This is one of my favorites on this list! 2 of 3 –...

I think it may be that everyone is slowing down a bit. When it’s -25 C outside, no one wants to stand still for very long. It’s easy to jump from a cab and walk quickly to your destination. In the summer, it’s better to take a stroll and stop to smell the metaphorical roses there are no roses here. How exactly do you say. No, thank you.
