After our visitors left we spent another day in Largs - there was a mysterious Pencil Monument on the sea front that commemorated that well known Battle of Largs on 2nd October 1263 between Norway and Scotland. Etoile - Sailing round Britain with a Dog. Thursday, 29 September 2011. The Bristol Channel - Swansea, Cardiff and beyond. The rainbow over Swansea should have been a clue: It rains a lot in Swansea! We had planned a day of rest after the excitement of the Bristol Channel Waves, so the rain was no great inconvenience. Eventually we managed to get out and have a look round - there was the very impressive River Tawe Barrage, complete with fish ladder. Swansea did have a pretty spectacular sandy beach.

Tides forced us to have a leisurely departure from Whitehaven, to be followed by anything but a leisurely sail across the Irish Sea - a 55 mile beat, wind strength 15 to 20 kts, sail change from #2 to #4 and two reefs - a bit of a wake up after our two weeks on land! Sir William Hilary is better known for his earlier idea of having trained people and suitable vessels for rescuing people at sea - now known as the RNLI.

It was never going to be a nice sail . as expected, we had 20kts of wind and at least 1kt of current against us - to have any hope of diving and getting back to Bonaire the same day we had no option but to motor sail. Although the diving at Klein Curacao was perhaps not worth the effort, the island itself was very dramatic. Approaching Klein Curacao with Scott and Aja. Ian has made a new friend.
