Tuesday, 5 August 2008. Something Extra for Sri Lanka. My trip to Sri Lanka would not have been possible without the help of many colleagues, friends and relatives who sponsored me before I left the UK. Sri Lanka '08: November 2007

http://srilanka08.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, 22 November 2007. Haven't had a lot to report for a while, but this changed this week as we bought our flights! We will be departing from London to Colombo on 16 January. Although we are only planning to be in Sri Lanka for six months the tickets are one year returns which might come in handy! Tuesday, 6 November 2007. So, I've decided to set up a blog to keep everyone updated on Sri Lanka. It still seems a long time before departure in January, but I suspect the next few weeks will fly by.

Sri Lanka '08: The Loony Dook in the Rain!

http://srilanka08.blogspot.com/2008/01/loony-dook-in-rain.html

Tuesday, 1 January 2008. The Loony Dook in the Rain! Feeling sleepy and a little fragile, after the New Year's Eve festivities I managed to get up this morning in time to be picked up by James and Sarah for the Loony Dook. After a quick cake, and a whisky courtesy of the organisers, James and I joined the procession in walking down to the beach led by a bagpiper. By this point there was a real buzz in the crowd, with many people wearing different costumes and obviously up for a laugh. Was great fun, but ...

Sri Lanka '08: Folk History at Koggala

http://srilanka08.blogspot.com/2008/07/folk-history-at-koggala.html

Tuesday, 22 July 2008. Folk History at Koggala. Norny and I visited the Martin Wickramasinghe folk museum near Koggala recently. There is a really great collection of traditional crafts and Sri Lankan everyday items there, so definitely well worth a visit. Here are a few examples:. This 50cm tall puppet, made for travelling shows, represents a king from the Kandyan era. The pale skin of hill country people is admired by other Sri Lankans, as are their hats. Sri Lanka '08: Parades and Axe-Weilding Toddlers

http://srilanka08.blogspot.com/2008/07/parades-and-axe-weilding-toddlers.html

Tuesday, 22 July 2008. Parades and Axe-Weilding Toddlers. The most famous Perahera festival in Sri Lanka is the Kandy Esala in August which features a cast of hundreds, and attracts thousands of spectators. We won't be able to go to that one as we are leaving the island this month. But don't feel too. Sorry for us, as it is perahera season, meaning everywhere you go you seem to see some kind of procession heading towards or away from a temple. So, we won't be at the Kandy perahera, but who needs it when ...

Sri Lanka '08: March 2008

http://srilanka08.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, 20 March 2008. National Park with Impressive Pachyderms! In between the hard work we also managed to find time to travel to Uda Walawe National Park. This is a very exciting place, as you can see many animals living as wild in the park, including the wonderful Asian elephants. We managed to secure an early morning jeep ride to take us round the park. The weather was a little dull, but this helped the animals to stay in the open without getting overheated! Unusual Sri Lankan Women. The first was...
