In keeping with the nautical theme of yesterday's post. Last year I watched a fascinating (but very sad) documentary. Recounting the life and death of Donald Crowhurst and the first ever non-stop round-the-world solo yacht race. However, the boat was dangerously unstable due to too much weight in the upper structure of the hull and insufficient ballast to compensate. This was mostly due to the weight of the ornate trappings and the cannons made of brass. The well to Hell. Page 3 of 9.

God wants you sick? We read the Bible with a filter of how we see God. To a degree, what we believe about the character of God influences our interpretation of the Scriptures. It is all too easy to google a Bible verse and use it to validate a theological or doctrinal stance. It is also too easy to take a Bible verse out of context. I could easily mis-quote verses to argue a compelling case for slavery, polygamy, even human sacrifice for example. I say a passionate NO, and I’ll explain why. A major sport...

Ballast - symondrake.com

The Vasa was a Swedish warship built 1626-1628. It was designed to be the most powerful ship in the Swedish Navy and was richly decorated as a symbol of the king’s ambitions for Sweden and himself. Upon completion the Vasa was one of the most powerfully armed vessels in the world. Despite an obvious lack of stability in port, the Vasa set sail on her maiden voyage on 10 August 1628 with much fanfare and celebration. How could things have gone so wrong? Here’s what history teaches us:. Pullquote align=rig...

The Dyatlov Pass Incident - symondrake.com

http://www.symondrake.com/dyatlov-pass-incident

The Dyatlov Pass Incident. Nine dead hikers, radioactive corpses, a cursed mountain, lights in the sky, military experiments and KGB cover-ups. It has been over half a century since ‘The Dyatlov Pass Incident’ and what really happened on the snowy Russian hillside in 1959 has become one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of all time. This is where the weirdness kicks in. The bodies of the hikers were found in a wooded area 1.5km from the tent. Six of the nine youth died of hypothermia, the remain...The i...

The well to Hell - symondrake.com

http://www.symondrake.com/the-well-to-hell

The well to Hell. The plot thickened when an audio recording emerged of the account, and just when you thought the story couldn’t get any better, a man who witnessed the drilling gave an eye-witness account of a bat-like creature coming out of the same hole. The story and it’s additions were made famous by supermarket tabloids (and by the gullible people who read them) of the early 1990s and it has now entered the halls of infamy thanks to the Internet (and by the gullible people who…). The truth: In 198...

Mr X and the perfect body. An old Trinny and Susannah. Doco demonstrated how 2 women out of 60 had the 'perfect' body proportions for their size. In other words, only 3% of the women observed had perfect body proportions. That means 97% of women have imperfect bodies. 97% of women have imperfect bodies. The dictionary defines the word 'imperfect' as:. Characterized by faults, mistakes, etc. defective. Not good news for you ladies reading this who are in the 97%. And what about us guys? Summit Fever - symondrake.com

http://www.symondrake.com/summit-fever

Summit fever is a mountaineering term which describes the dangerous state of mind experienced by some climbers while attempting to reach a mountain summit. It is a physiological phenomenon where a person disregards dangerous weather, route conditions, physical exertion or simply refuses to take them into consideration in their desperation to reach the top. Summit fever – A callousness that drives climbers reject ethics, sometimes literally climbing over dead bodies to reach their goals. For those of us w...

Bobbit Worm – Your new nightmare. The Bobbit Worm. A cute and cuddly name for a cute and cuddly worm? The Bobbit worm is. The Bobbit Worm (Eunice Aphroditois) is an aquatic ambush predator with really, really ridiculously terrifying jaws (truly, I can't emphasis this enough). It buries itself in loose sediment and waits until an unsuspecting Nemo or Dory just happens to meander close by. While they enjoy a leisurely Sunday afternoon swim - Hell's jaws are waiting. Even if your feet remain firmly on dry g...

My stories

Tuesday, 21 July 2015. THIS IS WHO I AM. THIS IS WHO I AM. Quite a few people have often asked who is Stephen Edward Garside? I mean we know he writes for a living, well tries to, but what’s “his” story? Well here’s a brief potted history of who I am and what I’m all about and please be warned, there are no stones unturned here and what you might find you might not like, so here goes…. The parts I do remember of my childhood are thus and like everyone else’s there are good parts and bad parts. I started ...

August 12, 2014. Middot; 3 Comments. Image sourced from: guardianlv.com). I know nothing about suffering. With all the atrocities being reported on in the Middle East regarding the ISIS terrorist movement over the past month, this has been a truth that has recently sunk even deeper into my psyche. Last month I wrote about the very real problem of human injustice. The irony was so amusing I almost laughed out loud. Freedom? Wrapped up in one of the most consumer-driven addictions available today? When the...

Teresa’s Bob Ross Party. August 9, 2015. Yesterday Teresa and I through a Bob Ross party (her belated birthday party). As no one else whom I know has actually done, we followed along to Bob Ross’s instruction in an episode of “The Joy of Painting.” A group of eight of us made our own landscape oil paintings. I have two oberservations:. Made by the group out of the leftover paints. One comment so far. August 3, 2015. But who sets the ideals anyway? If so, in what ways is it less perfect? Recently I’...
