Standards Based Grading, Day 0 | stevemaier
https://stevemaier.wordpress.com/2013/01/14/standards-based-grading-day-0
Musings of a science educator. Standards Based Grading, Day 0. January 14, 2013. SBG: With A Little Help From My Friends. With some encouragement from colleagues, I’ve decided to try Standards Based Grading in my second semester calculus based physics class this spring (2013). Because this is my first attempt at SBG, I leaned heavily on the work already done by others and their advice (namely Andy Rundquist. I also gained some instant supporters through Twitter. Assignments up to this point have always b...

Standards Based Grading, Week 2 | stevemaier
https://stevemaier.wordpress.com/2013/01/25/standards-based-grading-week-2
Musings of a science educator. Standards Based Grading, Week 2. January 25, 2013. Most of this entry is just journalling. SBG stuff can be found toward the end. Day 5 (Tuesday): Clothesline Lab. Monday was MLK Day). The short of it: what we did in lab today addresses Standards 15.2, 15.4 and 15.5. Not in entirety, but quite a bit of each. Replacing one end of the system with a pulley, it became obvious tension in the string was an additional variable that could be measured. Y(x, t) = Acos(kx – ωt). Appli...
Standards Based Grading, Week 3 | stevemaier
https://stevemaier.wordpress.com/2013/02/02/standards-based-grading-week-3
Musings of a science educator. Standards Based Grading, Week 3. February 2, 2013. We closed out Chapter 15, activating the last remaining standard. In hindsight, there were some “neat” things we didn’t do in this chapter (derivations and a few extra demos). But in the interest of time and really trying to focus on the standards, they simply didn’t make the cut. I also haven’t given a pop quiz yet. That will happen next class, maybe. As the time I. 1, 3, 5, . . . applies, rather than. Tuning fork –. A stu...

Understanding the Pressures Against Whiteboard Meetings | Teach. Brian. Teach.

Teach Brian. Teach. Just another WordPress.com site. Blogs You Should Read. Understanding the Pressures Against Whiteboard Meetings. July 7, 2012. An interesting phenomena in our department is the following one:. Our introductory physics sequence makes use of whiteboards. The typical mode is this:. The instructor models how to work a problem based on the reading students did the night before (the reading was incentivized by use of reading quiz when students show up). The particular problems students are ...
Differentiation on the Tennis Court | vsphysics

Thoughts about teaching physics. Differentiation on the Tennis Court. April 15, 2012. Would I call the practice a success? Hmm It was certainly not optimum. The better kids were bored at times, and were seen texting between rallys. The weaker kids were overwhelmed and lost at times, and I fear subjecting them to such a direct comparison with the other more talented (and sometimes younger) kids will damage their confidence. Instructors. Can we really expect. Is scarily too close to reality. You are commen...

Thoughts about teaching physics. July 27, 2011. Do College Admission Policies Provide Motivation for Sit-n-Get Education? This summer I’ve joined Twitter and begun blogging, and what I’ve read from both about getting students to “do” science has really resonated with me and inspired me. As a former engineer, I’ve always agreed with this and designed a very active and hands-on curriculum during the 8 years I’ve been teaching. She has a point. Does the product of these functions have a maximum? 8212;—...
Make Teachers Classroom Students | vsphysics

Thoughts about teaching physics. Make Teachers Classroom Students. April 15, 2012. As I mentioned in a previous post, I coach HS tennis. Last week I sensed our HS team was at a plateau with our practice routine. They were not getting a sense of the intensity and aggression I wanted to see on the court. So in an inspired moment, I decided to practice. To be a good student? What benefit could there be to the students if there was an adult teacher sitting next to them? How to do quality work on assignments.
More on Grade Inflation | vsphysics

Thoughts about teaching physics. More on Grade Inflation. January 7, 2012. What would you do if you were a parent in one of these cases? Wouldn’t you want your son or daughter to go to the school that gives the highest grades? What else are you paying for, really? Character education is nice, but colleges don’t measure that (as far as you know). Wouldn’t you send your son or daughter to a school that “informally guarantees” a minimum grade? Where does this end? From → Thoughts and Ideas. You are commenti...
Education Reform | vsphysics
https://vsphysics.wordpress.com/2011/12/05/education-reform
Thoughts about teaching physics. December 5, 2011. OK, I’ve been gone a while (and probably will be again). But the semester is almost over, and it looks like I’ll survive. So here’s a post to get back on-track… maybe…. When I can, I follow Twitter and people involved in education reform (#edreform). Today I read this article. Aren’t we supposed to be creating a “love of learning? Until colleges change their acceptance criteria, I don’t see anything changing for the better. This former teacher is embarki...

Thoughts about teaching physics. Smartest People I Know. July 15, 2011. 3) I wonder if he can get the World Cup matches? As a student of physics, I could define torque and how to calculate it. But it took my father to show me how to hook two combination wrenches together to increase the torque to remove a stubborn bolt. (My dad, the oldest of 12 kids, had to quit school after 10th grade to go to work.). How do I budget for the upcoming year? Indeed, how would colleges value this work? Leave a Reply Cance...
Finland = Education Mecca? | vsphysics

Thoughts about teaching physics. Finland = Education Mecca? August 9, 2012. OK, so we’re not Finland. I’m fine with that; it’s too cold there anyway. But do I envy their education system? From what I read and as a teacher, some of it sounds really great. It doesn’t take much searching to find out more, but to save you time the Business Insider presented these 26 facts about the Finnish education system. So what about this system could work for us yanks? From → Thoughts and Ideas. Research shows that face...

Thoughts about teaching physics. Play in the Physics Classroom and for the Physics Teacher. August 7, 2011. Wandering through my blog reader I came to view a couple videos about “play” in the classroom. I don’t remember how I got there, but that’s par for me. (After multiple tangents I say, “Now what was I going to do? Here is Tim Brown’s TED talk. I agree on the importance of play, but I wonder if parents will see it as valuable. (Just remembering the mother who sued her kid’s kindergarten. From → ...

Steve's Wanderings
Sunday, November 4, 2007. New Mexico to Home. These Sandhill Crane silhouette shots above were taken either just before sunrise or just after sunset. The rest of the shots I got there were within a couple hours of sunrise or sunset since the light got pretty harsh around midday. Cranes are the stars of the show down there, but Snow Geese are more common, at least when I was there. Other areas of the refuge had Western Grebes. Neotropic Cormorants like I had only seen in Texas before. These photos show so...
