The project’s study of equality and wellbeing in Spinoza’s philosophy informs our research into contemporary affordable housing design in the UK. We will be exploring how these ideas translate into the design of space, health, and environment for example, with reference to recent professional and social policy and guidance as well as economic structures such as debt and mortgages. Spinoza

A distinctive way of understanding equality can be found in the texts of seventeenth-century philosopher Baruch Spinoza. Equalities of Wellbeing aims to show how Spinoza grounds the concept of equality in proportion. This gives Spinoza’s concept of equality its connection to architectural thought. Better understanding of this concept can help us to think about its significance for increasing equalities of wellbeing through affordable housing design. Using Spinoza’s Ethics Tiff Thomas will be questioning ...

Brings together research in philosophy and housing design to explore a distinctive way of understanding equality. We are particularly interested in how a concept of equality based on geometrical proportion can provide a foundation for greater wellbeing. We see that concept emerging from the philosophy of Spinoza and from architecture, and we think it has significance for developing a more equal distribution of wellbeing through affordable housing.
