Clamps, clamps, and more clamps. A net builder can never have too many of these. Laying out the handles. I cut these out with a band saw and dial them in with a spindle sander. After the spindle sander, they are ready to have the first hoop glued into place. From rough sawn lumber to very precise strips. They vary in length, width, and thickness depending on which model they are for. After the "glue-up" comes the hand planing. We level out all the laminations and clean up all of the edges. This large Ste...

Tuesday, February 3, 2015. Winter Fly FIshing - Inland trout 2015. Leif tying up a new offering while fly fishing the Oatka. Winter has certainly made a home here in WNY. With prolonged spells of arctic air that never seem to moderate, we are now beginning to suffer from the effects of cabin fever. An ailment that seems to run long and hard this time of year. Colored up Spring Creek brown. I was joined by a new friend – Leif Mermagen of StreamwalkerNets. Make sure to check out his work with the link above.

Friday, September 26, 2014. Early fall fly fishing on Oatka. Before all the lake run salmon and trout really get going, I decided to get out one last time to my favorite trout stream – Oatka Creek. Early fall fishing on Oatka can be amazing. Not only is there some fall color starting to show itself, but I often have the stream and the trout all to myself, and some pretty nice trout at that! Smallest of the day. Caught on #20 zebra midge. I may not get back to Oatka for a while, but after a great afternoo...

Monday, November 17, 2014. Fishing with and Old Friend. Bob and I watched this fish chase down his swung streamer a good 3 feet before eating. Bob and I first met back in 2000 at our place of employment down in Canandaigua, NY. He had this fishing decoration hanging from his work desk that prompted the first conversation we ever had. A conversation that started with fishing, and more importantly – Fly Fishing! A 10lb brown trout to start the day. A gorgeous steelhead ready for release. This past Friday w...

Thursday, September 26, 2013. Fishig with the kids - Part 2. Katie, Jonathan and cousin Helen fishing on 4th lake. Well…the kids are back in school and it’s been a bit busy around here with all the new schedules and changes in work, lessons, and sports, etc. But I feel as though we are starting to hit our stride and find some sense of order. Ethan holds a rather nice rock bass. Jonathan with a nice Black Creek largemouth. And just before the kids went back to school we hit up Black creek one more time...

Tuesday, August 19, 2014. Midnight Mousin' - Small stream 2014. Yup…It’s that time of year again. Time for a little midnight mousin’. Over the past several years some friends and I have made plans during the dog days of summer for a late night rendezvous with some local small stream brown trout. We try and meet up right at dusk to give us the opportunity to get tied up, go over the game plan and even walk in before it gets too dark. Curtis, Jessie and Flyfish Horton. Of Wide sky Fly Fishing. Thursday, October 31, 2013. 50 BEST TAILWATERS TO FLY FISH". I have always loved fishing ever since I can remember. In fact I spent a good deal of each day as a kid dreaming of catching all kinds of different fish in all kinds of amazing places – a practice I still enjoy today. The only things that kept me from realizing those early dreams were a driver’s license and school. Okay…and maybe money too. I mean how far can you really get on your own when you’re just 10 years old! It is truly a great book to ...

Thursday, December 11, 2014. Brithday Fly Fishing 2014. Jessie and I with one of a few doubles on the day. This past Friday – that would be December 5. To be exact – A few of us brave souls made an attempt at putting our angling mark on some WNY tributary trout. Jessie with one of many. My good friend and Wide Sky Fly Fishing. Guide Jessie Hollenbeck had been giving me updates from his recent outings with his clients, and boy did the fishing look amazing. I was just hoping for it to half as good. The fis...

Tuesday, April 14, 2015. Fishing with the Boys. Jonathan works a long run with a big streamer. A little more than a week ago I had the perfect opportunity to take my two boys out to do a little fly fishing at a local WNY tributary. The afternoon temperature was in the low sixties and the water levels, although still high and stained (about a foot of visibility), were on the drop. The fishing looked promising. Ethan gets ready to release a nice drop back hen. Jonathan with yet another drop back hen. It's ...

Monday, November 18, 2013. Bradfield Boys Fishing Trip 2013. Jonathan poses with Grandpa B and his catch. After a little bit of a hiatus the Bradfield boys are back on the stream! A little encouragement from Dad at our last family gathering prompted me to get the ball rolling on a 2013 fly fishing trip. The plan was to gather everyone together for a fall fly fishing excursion on one of Western New York’s tributaries to Lake Ontario in search of lake run trout and salmon. Was the day to make it happen.
