Nearly Nonsense: October 2013

http://stuffandtuppence.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

On Being A Little Bit Broken. View my complete profile. Saturday, October 19, 2013. On Being A Little Bit Broken. This was not, in fact, my first ride in an ambulance. In my first semester of graduate school, I had been hit by a minivan while crossing the street (well, jay-walking across the street, if I am being perfectly honest—and I have the ticket to prove it). That incident resulted in a much more serious injury, as one might imagine: concussion, nerve damage, and a pelvis broken in three places.

All I Need to Know in Life I Learned from Ramen. View my complete profile. Monday, December 5, 2011. All I Need to Know in Life I Learned from Ramen. Not having had time to cook proper meals for the past week or so (I never lived like a college student until I went to grad school), I have been eating a lot of ramen. Call me unsophisticated, but I actually quite like the stuff. I mean, it’s noodles and massive amounts of salt—two of my favorite things! I only ever use half the packet of seasoning. My rame...

Nearly Nonsense: A(nother) return to Iceland

http://stuffandtuppence.blogspot.com/2014/08/another-return-to-iceland.html

A(nother) return to Iceland. View my complete profile. Saturday, August 9, 2014. A(nother) return to Iceland. This July, I was lucky enough to return to Reykjavik for research and a conference (which actually had very little to do with Iceland and a great deal to do with Chaucer—go figure). I was delighted to return to my favorite city, but I took two days at the end of my stay to travel north with a friend and visit an area that is very much not. On the way up to Skagafj ö. St, which, as all Thor. But m...

The great PC rebuild. You can’t claim real geek cred until you’ve actually built a PC, can you? So that’s what I, with a lot of help from a friend who’s very good and patient with hardware, JB, have been doing. The specs are awesome: a shiny new Intel processor, the i7 2600K. On an Intel DP67BG. 16GB of DDR3 SDRAM from Kingston. And two SSDs (one from Intel, one from Kingston). All going into my old case from Voodoo. That I think is about three years old. All your CPUz are belong to me. When tested with ...

Life's little wonders

Wednesday, 13 July 2011. Cue Rocky Theme Tune. On an "out there" whim I have decided to dedicate the next few weeks into training for the Nike Run To The Beat half marathon with my good pal Susie, or Boozy Soozy as we like to jeer on a good ol fashioned knees up. We have named ourselves Runny Bums (yummy! And will be dressing up in some kind of ridiculous attire to get people to support us while we sweat it out in Greenwich on the 25th September. Will I die, will I succeed? Thank you so much :). After be...

From the Odds and Ends of the Internet. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Day 18: The End. I thought last time was the end… I thought they had given up… Nothing is safe… I don’t suppose it ever was… …. It all started hours ago when I got to Tanlandia. There was no one there. After a while, a few locals showed up, but they left after an hour. I figured they had all given up on me. No, they were all just leaving so THEY could come. Those guys are really persistent! I’m writing more ...

Stuff and whatever…. Stuff I find interesting, or fun, or whatever…. A novel in progress. My life, day by day. Things I find awesome. Things I find odd. November 6, 2010. I ve created two knitting designs today, one scarf and one that is just a knitted picture with no functional purpose. The first design, The Rainbow Invader scarf, is a geeky and fun take on the LGBT rainbow. The next is a retro pixelart mario picture, both my own design from scratch. Tuesday, September 15, 2009. Fighting for the Crown. What a whirlwind couple of weeks! Finding out that September Crown was going to be held in Salem (or Terra Pomaria), was just too tempting for me. I decided to participate in Crown, for the very first time ever. I did it anyway! By the end of the invocation, both my legs were asleep and cramping (I felt like such a wuss! Meaning I had a blast, but lost all of my fights! With these two ladies as my inspiration, I'll be king in no time! A long time ago.

Reflections on the Blessed Life. I started tithing on September 8, 2009. Even saying that makes me nervous that I’ll come off as self-righteous. “Look at me! I’ve come to believe that giving is more about letting go of something you love so that you can love other things more. But I do know that I appreciate them more because I love money less. To me, the blessed life isn’t full of more stuff, it’s full of more freedom, joy and love. My hope as a dad in a song. May these words be the first. I will defend...
