Meta Tags are lines of code on a web page generally at the top of the page that where originally used by search engines to index your web page and obtain information about the web page that the search engine was visiting. Due to the abuse of the system, meta tags are almost always obsolete now by search engine standards but if used correctly can still give the search engines references about the web page. Abusing Meta tags is a sure fire way of getting your website banned by the search engines.

Every time a file is sent by a web server, either text, graphic, video and so on, it is recorded as a hit. Hits are not a particularly reliable gauge to compare different sites, as one page with five graphic elements will register six hits when viewed (1 for the page, 1 for each image), while a page with no graphics will only register one hit. The content is stored in a database (usually) that is accessed and placed on a page only when certain criteria are met.
