To write (verb): Communicate or express...

My hope is that there will come a day when I travel the world and write about it. For now, I search through notebooks, hard drives, oral histories, my grandmother's musings from 1904, cocktail napkins, my college poetry journal, and the backs of paid bills to transcribe all I've written or tried to write. Perhaps I'll end up with a book. In any case, my office will be neater...

To write (verb): Communicate or express...: To Everything, There is a Season...

http://susanbeardslee.blogspot.com/2012/03/to-everything-there-is-season.html

To write (verb): Communicate or express. To Everything, There is a Season. I woke up this morning with this song in my head: "Turn, Turn, Turn". The Byrds, a 1960s California folk rock band, made the most well-known version of Pete Seeger's adaptation from The Book of Ecclesiastes. It was taken almost word-for-word from the Bible, except for the last line: "A time for peace, I swear it's not too late.". To everything there is a season…. A time to be born, a time to die…. Hoping this won’t sound mor...

To write (verb): Communicate or express. TED Talks: Simple Ideas That Changed the World. Another wonderful TED talk, only seven and a half minutes long…. We sometimes discount the unanswered questions that wander around in our thoughts, forgetting that every brilliant idea started that way. Adam Savage of “Mythbusters” shares three simple ideas that changed the world. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). I'm a work in progress, and the way I seem to progress is to write about it. To write (verb): Communicate or express. Forced Off The Path. It’s happened to all of us. We’re walking along, oblivious, perhaps whistling, thinking that tomorrow will be relatively the same as yesterday, and suddenly, inexplicably, there’s this huge rock blocking our path. Your rocks might look like mine –- broken heart, dear one’s death, paralyzing disappointment, lost job, failed test, missed opportunity, disappeared friend, hasty word -– rocks take so many forms, but they all behav...But I’ve ...

To write (verb): Communicate or express. But “those things” were signed yearbooks, school essays, childhood journals, letters from friends, birthday cards, scrawled poetry, my earliest writings…and it actually gives me a soft ache in my chest just thinking about them. Perhaps if I still had them, they wouldn’t seem so precious, but I doubt it. A strange topic for Thanksgiving, but I’ll get to the point. Of losing something is nothing like actually. So, when a box arrived on my doorstep fairly recently.

To write (verb): Communicate or express...: TED Talk: Sculpting Waves

http://susanbeardslee.blogspot.com/2012/05/ted-talk-sculpting-waves.html

To write (verb): Communicate or express. TED Talk: Sculpting Waves. Reuben Margolin is a kinetic sculptor, and his works evoke nature and the feel of meditation. This video will only take nine minutes to watch, but you'll be amazed at how calming it is. I wish I could stand under one of these sculptures and watch for much longer. I can almost hear the soft movement of water and air and leaves. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). I'm a work in progress, and the way I seem to progress is to write about it.

These Kindred Spirits: March 2013

http://thesekindredspirits.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

Putting the flesh on the bones of my ancestors. Sunday, 17 March 2013. My Family During the War. My dad on the left with a pal. Both my parents were seven years old at the outbreak of war. My dad lived with his family in East Finchley, north London. He wasn't evacuated but stayed at home for the duration. He has vivid memories of watching the Battle of Britain. Was killed whilst serving on HMS Hermes in the Indian Ocean. My father was only 10 but suddenly the reality of war was driven home. My aunt belie...

Putting the flesh on the bones of my ancestors. Sunday, 20 January 2013. A Witness to History. Family legends are wonderful tools for the family historian. How often do they turn out to be real and how often complete fiction? King George V was his first cousin after all. However by the end of the year, raids were being carried out over the capital city. The airship falling over Cuffley. When the raiders approached the capital, the firing of guns and the dropping of exploding bombs seemed to wake up half ...

Putting the flesh on the bones of my ancestors. Sunday, 23 September 2012. Thanks to Twitter yesterday I came across what I believe will be an invaluable website to anyone tracing their convict ancestors who were transported to Tasmania. Aims, and I quote here from the website, "to record and study the founding population of 73,000 men, women and children who were transported to Tasmania. Many survived their convict experience and went on to help build a new society". Sunday, 9 September 2012. My grandmo...

These Kindred Spirits: James Miles: From Soldier to Telephone Operator

http://thesekindredspirits.blogspot.com/2015/02/james-miles-from-soldier-to-telephone.html

Putting the flesh on the bones of my ancestors. Sunday, 22 February 2015. James Miles: From Soldier to Telephone Operator. I've recently started travelling down a branch of my tree that has been much neglected in my family history travels, that of my 3 x Great Grandmother, Ann Esther Ibbott Miles' family. As I find happens so frequently, one particular person intrigued me more than most: James Miles, my 1st cousin, four times removed. By the time he was 18, James was working as a footman at Longstowe Hall.

I chose to write about her by using the scientifically proven method of closing my eyes and sticking a pin in a list of my forebears! Tempsford in the early 1830s. Putting the flesh on the bones of my ancestors. Friday, 2 August 2013. Voices from the Past. A few days across I discovered the British Library's website of accents and dialects. This is a wonderful find for me as it has added a whole new level of insight into my long ago ancestors. (Visit the British Library's website here. I was particularly charmed by the recording of an old gentleman, Mr Simons, from Great Barford in Bedfordshire. This lovely piece of audio. 1898-1901 (scale 1:50,000). Being able to ...

Putting the flesh on the bones of my ancestors. Sunday, 21 October 2012. The Mother Worse than the Son. I absolutely loved finding this small snippet during a perusal of the British Newspaper Archive the other week. On a search for any newspaper articles about my grandmother's family, the Antcliffes, I found this article from the Derbyshire Times and Chesterfield Herald, dated 7 November 1894. Well, the son, my Great Grand Uncle Fred, stole a duck! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The Mother Worse than the Son.

Putting the flesh on the bones of my ancestors. Sunday, 18 August 2013. Strangers in a small village. During a trawl through the British Newspaper Archive. On Find My Past. Luton Times and Advertiser, 6 Aprl 1894. It's probably a good thing that these two young men weren't apprehended. The idea that their assailants intended to 'break every bone' in their bodies is rather disconcerting. Tempsford has always been a small village. In the 1891. Census the population was recorded as 492 people. By 2011.
