The Big One – rusty duck
http://www.rustyduck.net/2015/07/26/the-big-one
Things are about to get a bit exciting chez rusty duck. You’ve seen this view many times, of course. But what I don’t think I’ve ever shown you before is the looming presence at the back of the terraces. And, indeed, above them. For this we will need to step back a bit. Nope, it still doesn’t work. I’ll have to move back still further and maybe even turn the camera around:. It’s going to come down. Now, however, the die has been cast. Not everyone will be best pleased. He must get a cracking view from up...

Diary of a hilltop garden. This entry was posted on June 13, 2015, in Garden Visits. On a recent visit to Dyffryn Gardens, just west of Cardiff, on a fairly dull day, I was mesmerised by the carpet of pink petals strewn across the ground beneath a venerable Cercis siliquastrum, carpeting a lovely set of stone steps. Despite this liberal covering, there was still plenty of blossom left in the tree too. 5 thoughts on “ Strewn. June 13, 2015 at 9:10 pm. That’s very impressive. June 14, 2015 at 10:00 pm.

Skip to primary content. The name of the rose. September 30, 2014. Last week, whilst thinking about how to fit more roses into my garden, I dug out these photographs. Way back in June, on the summer solstice no less, we took the girls and Sybil for an early evening game of frisbee in the grounds of Ashton Court. Frisbee isn’t really my thing, so I wandered off to the rose garden instead. Consequently, tracking down the roses I fall in love with feels virtually impossible I’ve tried comparing my pho...

Starring Roles – rusty duck

Persicaria virginiana var. filiformis and Astrantia ‘Ruby Wedding’. The blood red markings on the persicaria leaves are brought into sharper focus by the similar hues of the astrantia behind. In an English summer garden it is flowers we look to first to take the lead. Rightly so. But where would our borders be without the various textures and form of foliage to provide contrast and punctuation? Anemanthele lessoniana (syn. Stipa arundinacea). Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’. In the parts of the garde...

On A Wing And A Prairie – rusty duck

On A Wing And A Prairie. Ahead of the final instalment on tree felling, our customary pause for a breather and the End of Month view. A different aspect of the Precipitous Bank to start with this month, brought to you courtesy of all the extra light it now enjoys ex-conifer. The epimedium in the foreground may need a new home, the Saxifraga stolonifera too. It’s fortuitous that this new angle also cunningly conceals a bit of wanton destruction, of which more in a moment. The heleniums are at their peak.

Skip to primary content. Our (not so) daily bread : 2. July 24, 2014. The workshop takes place once a month throughout the year over the course of a weekend: a three-and-a-half hour session on Saturday evening followed by a shorter session on Sunday morning. And then it was time for breakfast. But despite our enthusiasm, there really was no hope of us polishing off all that we had made, so once again we left the bakery laden with treats to take home. Best of all we were given a pot of Laura’...Your ...

Out of my shed. Laquo; Grow London 19th-21st June. Greening up your neighbourhood. July 7, 2015 by outofmyshed. Hollyhocks are giving a wonderful display in our streets and front gardens. Their ability to grow in such tricky conditions never fails to astound and delight me. On a recent trip to France in June (postings to follow soon on some amazing gardens visited) we stayed in a B&B in Chartres. A village in the Loire near Loches, that I really understood what this could mean. To plant over 700 roses in...

In A Vase On Monday – A Summer Trio – Peonies & Posies
http://peoniesandposies.com/2015/08/10/a-summer-trio
In A Vase On Monday – A Summer Trio. Welcome to this weeks In A Vase On Monday when I am linking up with Cathy at Rambling In The Garden. To join in with her challenge to find something from the garden to put in a vase every week. This week I was in the mood to use some of my small bottles which have been tucked away at the back of the cupboard since the early spring bulb season. I have lots of dahlias coming out this week, but I wanted something a bit more delicate. The cake stand was a Christmas presen...

Skip to primary content. April 17, 2015. The appearance of wild garlic in the woods has signalled the start of this year’s foraging. So far, wild garlic has been shredded into carbonara, strewn in salads and added to omelettes. Yesterday I blitzed the plateful above, to make pesto. Plums followed, courtesy of my neighbour with whom I share what I make. One batch of plain plum jam and the other with a bit of cinnamon which gave it a warm base note. The before and after shots are above and below. The winte...

Hello Sky – rusty duck
http://www.rustyduck.net/2015/08/04/hello-sky
A short post today because our problems with broadband seem to be going from bad to worse, with BT unable to find the source of the trouble as yet. An engineer arrived early yesterday morning but since then we’ve still had numerous outages, no broadband at all throughout the evening and a phone line that sounds as though it too will give up the ghost at any minute. Slideshow deploy id=’16672′]. Crikey, if they’d worked that fast we could have afforded to do the lot! August 4th, 2015. And a shedload less ...
