The Great State: February 2007

Tuesday, February 27, 2007. A Bird Is A Bird Is A Bird. Why does bad behaviour make for a better story than good? Is it worthy of narration because it’s unusual or defies expectation? If so, why do we assume people will behave well in the first place. Do most people go about minding their manners, making the ones who don't notable? Tea crops, outside Ooty. Is this a shrine to the Easter Bunny, Poseidon, and the K-Mart home deco line, or what? Shoe game at the garden. St Joseph Pray For Us. In Bangalore t...

The Great State: September 2006

Wednesday, September 27, 2006. Bon Voyage, Sir. After much worst-case scenario creation in my mind, I gave in to my tender, heedless heart and got a dog. My courage has been rewarded with Sir Good Bonkers, the best dog in the world. He has been my loyal companion, and cuddle-bug for 17 months now. Sir loves you, so when you return home he gets very excited. Unfortunately, his squeaky voice doesn’t reflect his manly heart, and his squealing can be painful to the ears. Note the hands, very important. It wa...

Tuesday, May 29, 2007. Epilogue: Signs and Wonders. My jet-lag was pretty bad. I couldn't stop talking long enough to sleep for the first two days, and then I couldn't move for the second two. Also, it snowed on the day of my arrival, and I was constantly shivering for a week. But I finally adjusted to the time and temperature. Throughout southern India fiberglass monkeys, rabbits, and penguins patiently await (in the most irregular spots) deposits from the public. This one disturbs me,. As does this one.

Monday, August 28, 2006. I landed at Genghis Khan International Airport around 3 in the afternoon; and I was out and under the big, bright, blue sky in less than 20minutes. Posted by Desiree Byker at 6:49 AM. Friday morning, August 25, 2006, nearly drowning in sweat and anxiety, after mailing, trashing, selling, or giving away pounds of objects, I left my home of four and a half years, Seoul, South Korea. The Great State: December 2006

Tuesday, December 19, 2006. Lotus on the ceiling. Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens. Brown paper packages tied up with strings. These are a few of my favorite things. When the dog bites. When the bee stings. When I'm feeling sad. I simply remember my favorite things. And then I don't feel so bad. Silver white winters that melt into springs. These are a few of my favorite things. A Passage to India. Fragments of an elephant. Note the spectre of death.

These days, I've been amused by Jonathan Swift's. My day just kept getting better; the flag, efficient bureaucrats, and now magazines. As my adoration of my native land reached its peak, I unearthed from the pile what must have been a July issue of. I know it's nothing new, but have we learned nothing, ever. The Great State: October 2006

Monday, October 30, 2006. Some Kind of Demon. I had my final confrontation with the travel agency today; I got a refund of 340$, in cash. That's not too bad, considering that one can live tolerably well here for 20 days on that much money. This still leaves them with a rather ridiculous profit, but I have the satisfaction of letting them know what I think of their tactics. Rajasthan has a highly developed and amusing puppeteering tradition, and I have some videos which seem appropriate. Some kind of demon.
