On the 12th September 1914 an explosion ripped through the Ralph Mine in Huntly, New Zealand. 43 miners lost their lives and many were horribly injured. Margaret Thorburn was the daughter of William Thorburn and Janet Stewart born about 1841 in Kilwinning. She married James King on the last day of 1860 in Galston. They had 5 children John, Charles William, Mary in 1869 and Margaret in 1872. Wee Margaret died in 1873. Maybe that was the catalyst for what was to follow.
