Birds in Tasmania: Return of the Striated Pardalotes

http://tassiebirds.blogspot.com/2013/08/return-of-striated-pardalotes.html

Monday, August 05, 2013. Return of the Striated Pardalotes. There are definite signs of Spring about, the most obvious at the moment are the numerous Masked Lapwing pairs that have started nesting in various grassland sites. While for many, the arrival of the Welcome Swallows heralds Spring, I look forward to the return of one of our smallest birds, the Striated Pardalote. I always find such events uplifting and something to be savoured, and set off in pursuit. I've never seen large flocks of pardalotes,...

Birds in Tasmania: December 2013

http://tassiebirds.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, December 24, 2013. Enjoy the Christmas and New Year holiday, but please stay safe. The image is of a male Superb Fairy-wren, a common species of the east and south-east of Australia, including Tasmania. It was recently voted Birdlife Australia's favourite bird, with the Australian Magpie coming in a close second. Sunday, December 08, 2013. A Tale of Two "Swallows" (b) Dusky Woodswallow. A Tale of Two "Swallows": (a) Welcome Swallow. I sat there for perhaps 20 minutes, punctuated by their visits ...

Birds in Tasmania: February 2014

http://tassiebirds.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 21, 2014. Feisty Flycatchers, , , "Satins". The rasping call of the Satin Flycatcher, resonating through woodland and forest is, for me, one of the most anticipated birding events of every spring. "Satins" are one of the last of the summer migrants to arrive in Tasmania and among the first to leave. Being almost exclusively insect eaters and given the unpredictability of our summers, especially so this year, that's probably a wise move. In most of the reserves, such as the Waterworks Res...

Birds in Tasmania: Peter Murrell Reserve and 40 Spotted Pardalotes

http://tassiebirds.blogspot.com/2007/05/peter-murrell-reserve-and-40-spotted.html

Wednesday, May 16, 2007. Peter Murrell Reserve and 40 Spotted Pardalotes. I spent a very still, sunny morning in the Peter Murrell Reserve earlier this week. I usually opt for just such a morning to visit here, as those conditions make it so much easier to pick up the Forty-spotted Pardalotes in particular, but of course, many others species too. I feel rather cheated if I haven't at least. This stage I noticed a fellow walker, with dog, follo. Wing me, having walked past the notice quite. Accomplished s...

Sandy Straits and Beyond: April 2015

http://sandystraitsandbeyond.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Sandy Straits and Beyond. Monday, April 27, 2015. Even under the mangroves the reflections were nearly perfect. I stayed well out from the roost where I expected to find shorebirds and then sat sill on the kayak and let myself gradually drift in closer. When I do this the birds allow a much closer approach than if I paddle in with paddles flashing in the sunlight. Of course the Pied Oystercatchers were there and reflected in the still water. Several more photos of the Little Egrets made a great finish to...

Sandy Straits and Beyond: November 2014

http://sandystraitsandbeyond.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Sandy Straits and Beyond. Tuesday, November 25, 2014. High Tide at Mullens Roost. Walking around to the Mullens roost becomes more interesting when the tide is very high. Just how deep is the water around that tree and would it be easier to scramble through the bushes behind the tide line? High tide makes the roost look very beautiful. Something disturbed the shorebirds on the other side of the roost and they all flew up then settled down again on that side. Monday, November 10, 2014. Quite a number of o...

Alouk: A little puppy with empathy?

http://aloukmadeit.blogspot.com/2011/08/little-puppy-with-lots-of-empathy.html

Saturday, August 13, 2011. A little puppy with empathy? When I read the puppy books I was told over and over to yelp like a little pup would whenever my girl bit me- well that NEVER worked for me! Stella has had two major issues when she is walking- biting and spinning on the lead and pulling ahead of me. A few weeks ago Stella was going crazy on the end of the lead, spinning around, biting it and in her confusion she went behind me and I accidentally stepped on her toe! What an empathetic little thing!

Alouk: May 2009

http://aloukmadeit.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 27, 2009. After a bit of a drought on the felting front, I re-inspired myself with some amazing alpaca that I bought at an Australia Alpaca Day celebration- which was pretty funny in itself! So I made this special scarfe, I really wanted to play with a different way of finishing the edges of the scarfe so I made little holes and loops, which ended up working a lot better than expected if I may say so! It was lovely being back at the felting board! Here she is with it. Links to this post.

Sandy Straits and Beyond: In My Yard

http://sandystraitsandbeyond.blogspot.com/2015/06/in-my-yard.html

Sandy Straits and Beyond. Tuesday, June 23, 2015. I have a large house block - 2100 sq M. (which is just over half an acre). When I first came here the immediate need was for a fence that would keep my dog and cat at home with me! The easiest and cheapest was a good high wire fence which I then proceeded to hide with a lot of perimeter plantings. After 12 years here I now have lovely green walls that keep growing. One side is now a hedge of Lilly Pillies (. Which has to be trimmed regularly! I planted th...

Sandy Straits and Beyond: Mid-winter feeling like spring

http://sandystraitsandbeyond.blogspot.com/2015/07/mid-winter-feeling-like-spring.html

Sandy Straits and Beyond. Tuesday, July 7, 2015. Mid-winter feeling like spring. Yesterday was a perfect day - blue sky, bright sunshine, and a temperature of 24 (75F). I went down to the Mullens Picnic area to see what birds were around. At 9:30am the tide was slowly coming in. I had to go down again three hours later just to take a photo of high tide at the same place. And plenty more in full flower. The birds were there in hundreds - all calling and shrieking at the tops of their "birdy' voices! Littl...

Tuesday, June 16, 2009. Saturday, April 4, 2009. January 30th until the 2nd of February. Well finally i have managed to pen my report on our "beat the heat meet" trek that guided us through the heavenly Walls of Jerusalem high up in the central highlands of Tasmania! This was to be our second real hiking trip with the originals Jamie,Jed and Joel! Unfortunately Joel couldn't make it as he had a tapestry class to attend that weekend! With each of us oozing with the confidence of last trek! To me trappers ...

Tasmanian Motorbike Trip — The Great Escape 2..........If Any Wives Read This, I'm Only Joking

The Great Escape 2……….If Any Wives Read This, I'm Only Joking. Ride Across The USA. March 6, 2012. Just a quick note that I’ve just ridden across the USA. On a big assed Harley with my 17 yo son. Went with Eagle Riders. On Ian from Motoadventure’s. February 28, 2010. Okay, it’s been a while since we’ve done anything here, so here are a few updates:. 1 I’ve been back to Tassie a couple of times and have hired pretty much everything in Ian’s great fleet. Tops the list. What a bike! And much more on the site.
