Teaching in Rwanda

Friday, 31 July 2015. Every time I see my friend, my hand says, Hello. Nkombo Island was our destination today. It started with a trip across the lake in a traditional Rwandan dugout. We were met at the island by many local children of all ages who escorted us to the nursery. At the nursery we were greeted by the singing of the welcome song and then the fun began. There was painting and glitter on a grand scale. We had a fantastic game with the parachute and how the children loved the bubbles! There were...

Teaching in Rwanda: Visiting Munyove, Nkanka and more painting

http://www.teachinginrwanda.blogspot.com/2015/07/visiting-munyove-nkanka-and-more.html

Monday, 27 July 2015. Visiting Munyove, Nkanka and more painting. Lots of activity today! After saying goodbye to Andrea a group left for the Urugwiro Centre in Nkanka. Jane, Harriet and Sue had an enjoyable visit supporting hearing impaired children and observing some outstanding teaching. As it is the end of term, the finals of the handball tournament were being held and it was wonderful to watch the S1 versus S3 game with such a great atmosphere and support from the whole school. 29 July 2015 at 21:18.

Teaching in Rwanda: Morning of celebrations at Munyove and a visit to Nkombo Nursery

http://www.teachinginrwanda.blogspot.com/2015/07/morning-of-celebrations-at-munyove.html

Thursday, 30 July 2015. Morning of celebrations at Munyove and a visit to Nkombo Nursery. The third day at Munyove was a real highlight of the trip. It was a morning of celebration. After teaching a short lesson teachers and children were ushered outside to the courtyard which became a hub of excitement. We were then treated to a traditional Rwandan dance followed by a 'western' dance. We were all invited to join in and duly gyrated so as not to disappoint. Whilst Ben and Maddie were teaching outside, Ja...

Teaching in Rwanda: August 2014

http://www.teachinginrwanda.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Friday, 1 August 2014. Micro-teaching at Teacher Training and Goodbye to Rwanda. Stephan and Natasha act as teaching assistants! Lots of class participation. A mini maths lesson saw the students grouping bottle tops (a resource which is in plentiful supply). David used a formative assessment technique he picked up from Bridget to establish how well his students had understood the lesson. Handshaking and congratulations for the teachers. Ernest, one of the Isha teachers, receives his certificate.

Teaching in Rwanda: Arrival in Kigali

http://www.teachinginrwanda.blogspot.com/2015/07/arrival-in-kigali.html

Saturday, 18 July 2015. Five of the six in the early arrival party have now arrived safely in Kigali - if you have an Irish passport remember that you need a visa before you travel (we didn't know this at 4.30am this morning)! Tomorrow we make the long journey down to Kamembe in south west Rwanda. Andrea with her "Andrea" pizza. 19 July 2015 at 00:36. 19 July 2015 at 00:38. This might get deleted too. Or maybe I should start writing a message earlier in the day. Hmm. 19 July 2015 at 00:39. Painting at Ba...

Crafting Paragraphs from the Middle Out. When I am teaching my students how to write a paragraph, I begin with the middle sentences. I know, I just heard a collective *gasp* amongst you all. I know traditionally we have all started teaching paragraph writing with the topic sentence. I mean, that is what the kids are going to actually write about, right? So why not start with it? Let me show you how I do this with my students. Now, I am going to use my Paragraph of the Week. To do this. Why? Because I use...

Science and Social Studies. Body Systems Unit Wrap Up. The systems of the human body, and how they all function together, is a key standard for our fifth graders in science. So, as we wrapped up our unit, I wanted my students to put all the information they learned together into one, all encompassing presentation. So I broke out my trustee computer and created an easy to use template. For my kids to help guide them in reviewing all of the information they had learned throughout the course of our unit.

Teaching in Salvador

Friday, July 24, 2009. SENAC, UFBA and Departure. Wow - it's hard to believe this month has simply flown right by! I leave next Wed., so by all accounts I have only four days left. On Tuesday, at 5PM, I'll be reading fiction and poetry at the Casa Jorge Amado, and from what I've been told, I should expect A LOT of people, as the event is being advertised all over town, and Salvadorians like foreign art. No pressure. Posted by Jesse Waters. Tuesday, July 21, 2009. Here're the pics from last night - enjoy!
