The Road Less Traveled: Bryce Canyon NP
http://roamingbarbara.blogspot.com/2009/10/bryce-canyon-np.html
The Road Less Traveled. Thursday, October 15, 2009. Well, we HAD to stop at Bryce Canyon - surely the most unusual place on earth. We were there on a cloudy afternoon, but luckily you can't really take a bad picture at Bryce. This is the view from Sunset Point. But we wanted to go down among the hoodoos. We took off down Navajo trail - lots of switchbacks lead to this much photographed tree. Then we made a loop with the Queens Garden trail. Somebody got a little crazy with the trail markers. Bryce is won...

The Road Less Traveled: Here it is!
http://roamingbarbara.blogspot.com/2009/09/here-it-is.html
The Road Less Traveled. Wednesday, September 16, 2009. In my last post, I promised to reveal the greatest roadside attraction you never heard of. I have always said that all a town needs is a hook and tourists will come. Traveling throughout this marvelous country, Ron and I have discovered unbelievable creativity in the little towns we visit. From the king-of-all tourist traps, the Corn Palace. In Mitchell, SD, to the dead horned toad. The first can be seen from I94, but you need to see it up close to a...

The Road Less Traveled: Now We're Really Moving
http://roamingbarbara.blogspot.com/2015/08/now-were-really-moving.html
The Road Less Traveled. Saturday, August 8, 2015. Now We're Really Moving. We took the ferry from Port Townsend to Whidbey Island. It was pretty expensive at $71 for a four-mile crossing, but it's our plan to take WA 20 through the North Cascade Mountains so we bit the bullet. Four years ago we were right in the front of the boat so it looked like we were driving. This time we had a row of bumper cars. Always fun to watch the docking. This captain didn't even bump. When we arrived in Mt. Vernon, our ...

The Road Less Traveled: Wheee !!
http://roamingbarbara.blogspot.com/2008/09/wheee.html
The Road Less Traveled. Tuesday, September 23, 2008. Here we are starting up Long Canyon. The drivers in order are Max, Bertie, Ernie, Bob, John, and Tom behind us. It wasn't as smooth as it looks in this picture since it was pretty rocky, but then it wouldn't be any fun. And it was beautiful. This dip was a challenge and a couple of the vehicles bottomed out. (Yes, I'm doing that back-seat shooting again.). While there, we broke out the lunches. WINs are always happy when eating. Here's the other Jeep&#...

The Road Less Traveled: Sedro-Woolley
http://roamingbarbara.blogspot.com/2015/08/sedro-woolley.html
The Road Less Traveled. Tuesday, August 11, 2015. The cute town of Sedro-Woolley is the jumping off point for WA 20 through the North Cascades. We stopped at the visitors center and got lots of good information for our big adventure. I've been looking forward to this drive for years and I hope I haven't over-anticipated. You know, where you expect so much that you're bound to be disappointed. I'll crop it so you can see some of the detail. Ron liked the old drugstore one. I would love to see that. Those ...

The Road Less Traveled: Whose Idea Was This?
http://roamingbarbara.blogspot.com/2010/02/whose-idea-was-this.html
The Road Less Traveled. Friday, February 19, 2010. Whose Idea Was This? Oh, that would be me. Ron and I hiked up Picacho Peak four years ago and I really don't remember it being so difficult. Carol brought up the idea that maybe it's like childbirth and you block out the difficulty. Driving down I10, the specter of Picacho Peak rises 1500 from the desert floor. We'll be climbing to the tip of that highest point on the left. The trail steadily rises with lots of switchbacks to the saddle, 800 feet above t...

The Road Less Traveled: Mill Creek Discovery Park
http://roamingbarbara.blogspot.com/2008/07/mill-creek-discovery-park.html
The Road Less Traveled. Friday, July 11, 2008. Mill Creek Discovery Park. The original sawmill was built here in 1780. This is a recreation of it, built as authentically as possible according to all the historical information available and artifacts from the site, as well as the teeth marks on timbers from buildings of the time. After the demonstration, a naturalist gave an informal talk and pulled this snake out of his shirt. Yuck. He did admit that was probably why he was still single. Next we crossed ...

The Road Less Traveled: Monument Valley
http://roamingbarbara.blogspot.com/2008/10/monument-valley.html
The Road Less Traveled. Saturday, October 11, 2008. I had to capture my first sight of Monument Valley as we drove in last Thursday. (This is another shot out the front window.). The entrance fee was $5 each and $10 to 'primitive camp' in what is basically a parking lot with a few picnic tables and fire rings. Great for us! All the rest of the day and into the night. Even with all the windows shut, we have grit everywhere. As I was turning away to leave, I noticed Mitchell Butte was looking pretty fine.

The Road Less Traveled: Yippee!
http://roamingbarbara.blogspot.com/2011/09/yippee.html
The Road Less Traveled. Wednesday, September 21, 2011. Today I received my computer back from HP after its hard drive crash. But what's really amazing is they saved my files, which in my world means my pictures! I'm doing a happy dance! To access Whidbey Island from the north, you drive a narrow double bridge over Deception Pass. Named by George Vancouver in 1792, the 'deception' was that at first he thought the island was a peninsula. As I mentioned in a previous post ( here. We had such a good time....

The Road Less Traveled: Escaping
http://roamingbarbara.blogspot.com/2015/08/escaping.html
The Road Less Traveled. Friday, August 7, 2015. We stayed two nights at the Escapee Park in Chimacum. We arrived just in time for their hot dog and root beer float lunch. Yummy! We got two of the last three hot dogs, so they were good and charred. Just the way we like them. It's a really pretty park, but I have to confess that the main reason we stopped was for the cheap laundry. We did four loads for a total of $6! We got a little exercise by taking the 2-mile trail around nearby Anderson Lake. View my ...
