Or else, what?: Regarding that xkcd comic
http://orelsewhat.blogspot.com/2011/01/regarding-that-xkcd-comic.html
Or else, what? Tuesday, January 4, 2011. Regarding that xkcd comic. About finding answers when dealing with serious illness was posted on xkcd recently. One of my brothers was recently in the hospital for a while and I have been thinking about him. I like the comic. I like science because my job holds me in tension between concrete, observable facts, and the fact that scientific knowledge is always changing; what we know is reliable but we're always learning surprising new things. -: when positive thinking goes wrong
http://cobeinthemorning.blogspot.com/2010/02/when-positive-thinking-goes-wrong.html
When positive thinking goes wrong. The "self esteem movement" started in the late 70's. Born out of assumptions and the likely self-esteem of those who propagated it; it's main tenet is that a positive view of oneself is an important thing to have. My objection to this is simple- If you tell me that you feel good about yourself, it begs the question "Why do you feel good about yourself? What the critics say: "self-esteem: an erroneous appeasement." -Ambrose Bierce. More varied answers could be:. Not to t...

Or else, what? Friday, June 22, 2007. Fixing the Mac Trash Can UI. In Mac OSX, there is a trash can that lives on the dock. One of the neat things about Mac OS is how it emphasizes that everything goes from somewhere to somewhere - a file doesn't get deleted, it goes into the trash can, and you can pull it back out again, which I do sometimes, because I get overzealous and throw things away that I ought not. Or else, what? Friday, June 3, 2011. Link: The Process Of Leaving. Lauren, who recently found my blog and contacted me, is now writing at The Process Of Leaving. About her process in leaving the church. I think that readers of this blog may find her account interesting; she's describing how she feels as she has conversations with people that are important to her as she leaves. Or else, what? Thursday, August 16, 2007. He must really like hiking. We got our backpacks because some guy died. Dad bought a sailboat from the widow, and she threw in these ugly, uncomfortable, faded orange backpacks, mainly to get rid of them. Links to this post. Wednesday, August 15, 2007. Or else, what?: On "Why Are Atheists So Angry?"
http://orelsewhat.blogspot.com/2011/03/on-why-are-atheists-so-angry.html
Or else, what? Tuesday, March 15, 2011. On "Why Are Atheists So Angry? Rabbi David Wolpe wrote Why are Atheists so Angry. Atheists are angry because we are members of a cultural out-group. We're not in as bad of a situation as, say, racial minorities, in that we have the choice to keep our mouths shut. We're are an out-group, though. How many atheist characters do you see on TV? Atheists aren't necessarily stodgy, we just look for the unknown in things that can be studied, rather than beyond the material...

Lack-Query: Constitution Lesson
http://lackquery.blogspot.com/2010/09/constitution-lesson.html
The devil is in the "DROP TABLE" statements. Monday, September 27, 2010. A little less than a couple weeks ago was Constitution Day. Everyone knows the warm and cuddly figure known as Ann Coulter. You know, the tall, blonde super-Republican who highlights how not easy on the eyes Rush Limbaugh is in in any kind of lighting. Cuddly if you're a praying mantis or a Nosferatu. Recently, Ann Coulter got invited to Homocon. Are still searching for a "Hunter S. Thompson Literary Honor" designation. Inviting her...

Lack-Query: Advocacy on a Full Belly
http://lackquery.blogspot.com/2010/07/advocacy-on-full-belly.html
The devil is in the "DROP TABLE" statements. Monday, July 12, 2010. Advocacy on a Full Belly. Sometimes I really wonder about some of the activists out there. Okay, maybe I wonder all the time. Things that could contribute greatly to progress (in my opinion), such as nuclear power, are being halted because of activists. Network. You'll eat it and freaky stuff will start happening to you or something. Although if the comic books are right about that, I wouldn't mind. Sure, there's some argument to be said...
