Thursday, May 26, 2011. Train through Fiddle Country. I recently took the train home from South Carolina to Chicago through Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana because I wanted to see where some of the fiddle tunes that I love so much come from. Vitularia: March 2011

http://vitularia.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 21, 2011. I've often talked about fiddle highs- that wonderful lingering happiness that comes from playing along at a great jam- but today I'm feeling something I'd describe as fiddle peace. I felt content. Not discouraged like the other night when I was missing notes and losing the beat and wondering what was wrong. (I think I was just too tired to play.) And not ecstatic like when my bow is flying and the notes seem to be tumbling out just right. I just felt content. Monday, March 7, 2011.

Thursday, September 22, 2011. Advice from My Classical Teacher. The other day my teacher asked me to make a list of all the things she'd told me to think about while playing the violin so that I could choose three to work on. So I did. It was kind of fun. Vitularia: No Regrets

http://vitularia.blogspot.com/2011/09/no-regrets.html

Saturday, September 24, 2011. I often hear adult beginners say, "If only I had picked up the fiddle back when I was five . . . " but not me. I have no regrets. Last night I found myself in a candle-lit garage with quilts draped across the back wall. Chairs were pushed back around the perimeter and the front was open to the cool night air. If I had started lessons back when I was a child I might have played better last night but I don't think I would have been any happier. Berea College Sound Archives.

Tuesday, July 12, 2011. Instrument Petting Zoo: What a Day! I know three fiddle bows that could use a really GOOD bath. My husband and I helped staff the Instrument Petting Zoo at the Folk and Roots Festival in Chicago from noon to 4 pm on Saturday and what a day it was! We had drums, guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukulele and, yes—three fiddles. I didn’t have my glasses so could read the labels but the largest was a ¼ and the other two were even smaller. So, how did it work? Then I’d pick up a fiddle, p...

Friday, January 20, 2012. Discovering Texture in 3-Note Slurs. This week I'm working on a tune with two back-to-back three-note slurs- Pretty Little Shoes- and I've always thought of them as just two long bow strokes. Until this morning. One of my goals this year is to come to understand more about the beautiful and subtle nuances found in the music of old-timers like Edden Hammons. I think today's discovery is a tiny step in the right direction. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Berea College Sound Archives.

Vitularia: February 2011

http://vitularia.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 25, 2011. I've been lazy and I think that's a good thing. A few weeks ago I posted in the forums asking for some help learning to hear when the strings are tuned in perfect fifths. I needed some examples to know for sure what it sounds like when beats disappear. Well, fast forward a bit and the last week or so I haven't been using the tuner much because, well, it's kind of hard to keep track of it. I've just been checking and tweaking when things don't sound quite right. A few weeks ago ...
