NEWS FROM THE NETHERLANDS. Thursday, January 1. Croatia Part 3: Vis Paradise, Sibenik and Krka. One of our days on Vis Island was spent driving the narrow, winding roads of the island. First, we drove over to a monastery built on the edge of the town of Vis. The views from the monastary looking back on Vis were postcard perfect. I felt like I had found something out of a James Bond movie when I first saw the submarine pin. It was built to dock and hide submarines during World War II. After the hot and sw...

NEWS FROM THE NETHERLANDS. Monday, November 19. Veterans Day in Belgium. In celebration of Veterans Day this year, Chad and I visited one of the World War II American cemeteries we hadn't seen before, the Henri Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial. The short drive though the rolling hills in the southernmost part of The Netherlands and across the border into Belgium was really nice. I forget how much I miss a little variation in terrain, it's flat, flat, flat here. Monday, November 12. Our group was t...

NEWS FROM THE NETHERLANDS. Saturday, April 26. Ireland: All things Dublin. At the end of March, Chad's busy work schedule opened up a bit so we flew to the Emerald Isle for five days of Irish culture. Ireland is somewhere I wanted to visit, considering my mom's family is Irish, but it was never at the tip top of my travel priorities. We decided to go because of prices and the time of the year not being the best to go to coastal destinations and I'm so so glad we did! The library was stunning! We left the...

NEWS FROM THE NETHERLANDS. Monday, December 29. Croatia Part 2: Fine dining, Split and Vis Island. While Zadar isn't much talked about as far as Croatian travel goes, I ended up really liking our time there. I liked walking along the sea wall and taking in the laid back lifestyle. We ate some great food as well! Since Croatia is so close to Italy, authentic Italian food and drink is abundant. Afterward, we visited the wine cellar below the restaurant and bought a bottle to enjoy later on that week. We fo...

NEWS FROM THE NETHERLANDS. Thursday, January 8. More Switzerland: The Jaungfraujoch. Chad and I decided that the unique experience of visiting the top of the Swiss Alps was worth the money (Switzerland is the most expensive place we have traveled! So we bought tickets for the Jaungfraujoch and up we went! After all the hiking we did the day before, I was glad our activities that day mainly involved riding funicular trains. First stop on the way up. View at our first stop look-out. The train ride from Wen...

NEWS FROM THE NETHERLANDS. Monday, July 21. We decided to take advantage of the long Easter weekend and drive to Paris to take in a few sights we hadn't yet seen and see more of the city we both enjoy. Chad and I spent the weekend in an efficiency apartment in the Saint Germain district, a very central location to call home for a few days. Air BnB is the best! Jardin de Luxembourg, always a good place for a picnic or a stroll. My favorite view of Notre Dame from the eastern side of Ile de la Cite. One of...

NEWS FROM THE NETHERLANDS. Wednesday, October 31. The Air Force Ball. September 18th marked the 65th birthday of the United States Air Force. In celebration, a formal ball was thrown at most Air Force bases across the world. This year, Chad and I decided to attend the event with many of the Air Force friends we have made since moving here. Chad happened to be the only Army representation there so his uniform stuck out among all of the Air Force men and women. Maybe that will happen in the years to come.

NEWS FROM THE NETHERLANDS. Thursday, March 6. The weekend following New Year's, we decided to drive west to Antwerp. This Belgian city has been on our radar for a while and we figured it would be a good time to visit! On the drive over, we made a strategic stop at the Westmalle Trappist brewery. This is one of Chad's favorites so we stopped in the abbey's cafe for a beer. Tours are not allowed but we saw main building where the brewing takes place. In front of City Hall. The diamond district borders the ...
