The Celluloid Phantom: July 2011

http://thecelluloidphantom.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Friday, July 29, 2011. Mccabe and Mrs. Miller. Essay on the film: All of the characters know each other, and the camera will not stare at first one and then another, like an earnest dog, but is at home in their company. As in real life, scenes are filled with overlapping, often inaudible chatter. But, as Ebert notes, sometimes all that matters is the tone of a room. Posted by Kate Blair. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The Celluloid Phantom: March 2011

http://thecelluloidphantom.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, March 20, 2011. Set in the bleak winter of the Ozarks is exactly the movie I didnt know I had been waiting for forever. Really though, Winters Bone. Borrows very little from traditional noirs. I wouldnt necessarily call it a noir. But maybe a mythical, feminist, coming of age fable about duty and independence. with a noir. Of which is meth. The Celluloid Phantom: September 2011

http://thecelluloidphantom.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, September 8, 2011. A truly haunting portrait of class division and resentment. In La Ceremonie. The relationship of a family and their maid slowly becomes toxic, leading to a finale of sudden and irrevocable violence. This film is less of a thriller than a mystery. There is no central puzzle to unravel; the mystery lies in the hearts of the characters themselves. Posted by Kate Blair. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Film studies for free. The Celluloid Phantom: August 2011

http://thecelluloidphantom.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 7, 2011. I am fixing things, ever so slowly. Google's campaign for world domination has wrought some negative effects on my little corner of the blogosphere. Luckily, the damage is reversible. Just painfully tedious to pick-through, html-wise. Here is another picture, to get us through the dark times:. Posted by Kate Blair. Wednesday, August 3, 2011. You might have noticed that a lot of my images seem to have disappeared overnight and turned into sad, indifferent little icons. Up in the Air.

The Celluloid Phantom: November 2011

http://thecelluloidphantom.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, November 17, 2011. Written on the Wind. For example, is basically a retelling of All That Heaven Allows. And I discovered that much of what I love about Fassbinders work- his lurid colors and the performative power of his characters- are also references to Sirk. You can see the power of these images reverberating outward into so many films that follow them. Posted by Kate Blair. Written on the Wind. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Film studies for free. The Enthusiast: thinking about things: Art in Print (Issue 5) Review: Richard Deacon at Paragon Press

The Enthusiast: thinking about things. Musings, ponderings, noticings, appreciatings. Wednesday, January 18, 2012. Art in Print (Issue 5) Review: Richard Deacon at Paragon Press. The plates have been subtly rotated and layered, forcing depth in the diamond-shapes where color overlaps—the metallic ink forces you to move around the prints, to look from many angles, to consider them spatially, and it is this bodily effect that returns Deacon’s line to sculpture. Vol 1, no. 5. Labels: Art in Print.

Honestly I did. Early buzz around. Was poor to say the least, but in recent days it’s started sounding a little. Triumphant. It’s as if people just want the film to fail – a view not helped in the least by dimwitted spods accusing anyone with a positive opinion. Is a complete mess. Considering his debut film.

Exploring the American West in the contemporary imagination. About (and Spoilers Policy). REVIEW: Deadwood (TV series 2004-2006) – David Milch, Timothy Olyphant. June 9, 2011. Manages to say something about the very nature of civilisation in a more complete and satisfying way than any other Western. Bullock, the unbending lawman, contrasts sharply with the villainous saloon owner Al Swearengen, who in just the first episode is arranging to sell salted claims. At the time of its first run,.
