The Deskbound Birder: India (Rajasthan and Kashmir) Trip - 25th July to 1st August - Background and Day 1

http://www.thedeskboundbirder.blogspot.com/2015/08/india-rajasthan-and-kashmir-trip-25th.html

Tuesday, 4 August 2015. India (Rajasthan and Kashmir) Trip - 25th July to 1st August - Background and Day 1. Ian, Andy and Martin had previously used Asian Adventures. And, naturally, they were keen to ‘protect’ their sites from other tour operators. Asian Adventures do have experience of birding in Kashmir and a knowledge of calls and habitat requirements would have been helpful in locating our quarry species. 8211; 10:15 flight from London Heathrow Terminal 5 at 10:15, arrive Delhi in the evening. ...

Tuesday, 18 August 2015. India (Rajasthan and Kashmir) Trip - 1st August - Day 8. Showed well in the same clearing, much better views than previously. We then dropped down towards a river and birded along the river and through scattered trees before climbing back up the hill and into the pines. A pair of Plumbeous Water-redstart. Western Crowned Leaf Warbler,. Lemon-rumped Leaf Warbler,. Tytler's Leaf Warbler,. Dawn in the pine forest at Yousmarg. Oriental Turtle-dove - Yousmarg. White-cheeked Nuthatch -...

The Deskbound Birder: Bedwyn Brail, Bentley Wood and Bonaparte's Gull - 12th May

http://www.thedeskboundbirder.blogspot.com/2015/05/12th-may-bedwyn-brail-bentley-wood-and.html

Monday, 18 May 2015. Bedwyn Brail, Bentley Wood and Bonaparte's Gull - 12th May. Today I had the pleasure of spending a day surveying Bedwyn Brail in Wiltshire close to Shalbourne this is largely a private site and I was there plotting the distribution of Bluebell and selected Ancient Woodland Vascular Plants (AWVP) within the woodland to inform the location of on-going conservation woodland management. It was a beautiful spring like day and the Bluebell. Butterflies included vibrant Brimstone. Had been ...

The Deskbound Birder: India (Rajasthan and Kashmir) Trip - 29th July - Day 5

http://www.thedeskboundbirder.blogspot.com/2015/08/india-rajasthan-and-kashmir-trip-29th.html

Friday, 14 August 2015. India (Rajasthan and Kashmir) Trip - 29th July - Day 5. Our first stop was adjacent to the reservoir a kilometre or two below the main restaurant and main carpark at Yousmarg, we climbed up the hill through the tall pine forest and walked a short loop up the slope and back to the road – energy levels were low due to the very early start and thinner air at higher altitude. There were singing Western Crowned Leaf Warbler. And a single singing Brook’s Leaf Warbler. This low level of ...

The Deskbound Birder: India (Rajasthan and Kashmir) Trip - 28th July - Day 4

http://www.thedeskboundbirder.blogspot.com/2015/08/ndia-rajasthan-and-kashmir-trip-28th.html

Saturday, 8 August 2015. India (Rajasthan and Kashmir) Trip - 28th July - Day 4. Today was to be mainly a travel day with an eight hour drive back to Delhi ahead of us. We had a bit of a lay-in and were up at 06:30 for a 07:00 breakfast, loaded the car and drove short distance to the thorn forest of Puscar (08:00-10:00). Targets here were White-naped Tit. But we saw neither and the birding was generally a little slow with highlights being Small Minivet. Back on the road we arrived in Delhi at 21:00 and c...

Travels with birds: December 2014

http://travellingbirder.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 30 December 2014. With post Christmas fatigue setting in we desperately wanted a long country walk, ideally with a suitably located refuelling stop. We parked at Westbere and walked down to the Stour, then along the swollen river to Fordwich. With none of the summer's dragonfly distractions Mac was quite surprised just how quickly we arrived, it usually taking over an hour just to get to the river! Sunset over Grove Ferry. Saturday, 27 December 2014. A Boxing Day Bonus. Pete Level and Dungeness.

Travels with birds: Flighty Pipits and showy Owls

http://travellingbirder.blogspot.com/2015/02/flighty-pipits-and-showy-owls.html

Tuesday, 10 February 2015. Flighty Pipits and showy Owls. Shellness and Capel Fleet. Winter birding on Sheppey can be varied and exciting, with a range of raptors and high numbers of Lapwings, Golden Plovers, ducks and geese. As I drove across the island a Peregrine flew over the road and across the fields - good start. I arrived at Shellness hoping to find the wintering Richard's Pipit that has been frequenting the grassy banks of the sea wall over the last few weeks. The Owl fights back. The Owl flew a...

Travels with birds: Well there wasn't much else to do.....

http://travellingbirder.blogspot.com/2014/11/well-there-wasnt-much-else-to-do.html

Sunday, 30 November 2014. Well there wasn't much else to do. We bumped into Martin Coath in the car park and stopped for a chat. Guy Bailey joined us and Ray O'Reilly followed us down the path. I was quite surprised by the interest especially when Martin told me Steve Gantlett had been to see it - maybe I should have been more interested after all? The American White Ibis roosts on a horizontal branch with a Grey Heron. It had a good poke around at the base of the tree. The Ibis flies to the bank. We wal...
