The Inexplicable Career of Paul: March 2011

http://theinexplicablecareerofpaul.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

The Inexplicable Career of Paul. The adventures of a highly trained manager. Wednesday, 30 March 2011. After he had settled in he went to some meetings. There seemed to be plenty to choose from. He was very impressed as this must mean that the Department of Hire was a very productive place. His immediate boss scheduled a meeting with him on the Wednesday and spent an enigmatic half-hour outlining his own recent work before closing with the equally challenging statement:. Let's think 'Big', he thought.

The Inexplicable Career of Paul: April 2011

http://theinexplicablecareerofpaul.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

The Inexplicable Career of Paul. The adventures of a highly trained manager. Wednesday, 27 April 2011. Every moment of every day had to be justified and fought for. Paul's premise was that they all worked a five day week, nine to five, but even he knew that in reality the drivers did much more than that. All the same, each time Paul had reviewed the submitted assessment the final answer always seemed mysteriously to come to a total of 'five days'. What's this do you do on a Wednesday afternoon then?

The Inexplicable Career of Paul: August 2011

http://theinexplicablecareerofpaul.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

The Inexplicable Career of Paul. The adventures of a highly trained manager. Wednesday, 31 August 2011. Paul slices the cake. The summer was drawing to a close and many of the under-managers were returning from their holidays. It did not seem to matter if they were away at the same time as each other but the drivers had to stagger their holidays to ensure several of them were always around. The drivers looked at all this and wondered. What on earth was the point? But Paul wasn't listening. He was cou...

The Inexplicable Career of Paul: Paul seeks innovation

http://theinexplicablecareerofpaul.blogspot.com/2011/08/paul-seeks-innovation_24.html

The Inexplicable Career of Paul. The adventures of a highly trained manager. Wednesday, 24 August 2011. On one sunny morning during the sultry late summer therefore, Paul sent an email around to the staff in the Division of Unhired Cars - they were responsible for most of the emergency work that did not involve actual breakdowns needing stripping down of the engines - inviting them to take part in a competition:. It was not specified what the prize might be. One of them asked: 'Paul, this little toy town...

The Inexplicable Career of Paul: Paul sorts out some staff disharmony

http://theinexplicablecareerofpaul.blogspot.com/2011/08/paul-sorts-out-some-staff-disharmony.html

The Inexplicable Career of Paul. The adventures of a highly trained manager. Wednesday, 17 August 2011. Paul sorts out some staff disharmony. Some of the administrative staff had not been seeing eye to eye for some time. The office was something of a no-go area for the drivers lest they be embroiled in another round of 'she-said-this-to-me' and the amount of time they had spent counselling the various parties was beginning to add up. I'm arranging a mediation session," was the reply. I've drafted in an a...

The Red Dolphin: March 2010

http://red-dolphin-on-health.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Hard-hitting scrutiny on the politics of health. Friday, 19 March 2010. So how do we save money in this Alice in Wonderland pseudo-economy? And answer came there none. Do more work; see more patients? See different patients by changing efficiencies? Do work for free? Sorry - still won't work. And there you have the internal market in an unpalatable, zany nutshell. Business principles in the ultimate non-business environment. Posted by Bernard Stacey. Monday, 8 March 2010. Here comes the rain. If you like...

The Red Dolphin: May 2010

http://red-dolphin-on-health.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Hard-hitting scrutiny on the politics of health. Monday, 31 May 2010. All the more important therefore that the man overseeing these spending rearrangements is of the very highest quality and seeing David Laws disappear into the political shadowlands in the precise opposite of what is necessary. The exposure of a claim that may or may not be at the limits of the definition of the word 'partner' coupled with the Daily Telegraph's shameful homophobia does not begin to justify this ousting. Sea-change in th...

The Red Dolphin: January 2010

http://red-dolphin-on-health.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Hard-hitting scrutiny on the politics of health. Thursday, 28 January 2010. Worse, the energies (considerable) wasted in inventing methods of cost cutting with respect to the other party are enormous and could so much better be spent on actual work. During the last decade the number of NHS managers has doubled but the number of frontline staff has risen by only 30%. When you go to your local hospital you are more likely to bump into a manager than a clinician. Is this 'rage against the machine'? Written ...

Hard-hitting scrutiny on the politics of health. Monday, 22 February 2010. You get what you pay for. That's what comes from having one's cake and eating it. Ultimately they will regret destroying what had been and some lessons are hard to learn but necessary. Oh woe, my beautiful profession. Posted by Bernard Stacey. Wednesday, 17 February 2010. Hard-hitting scrutiny on the politics of health. Monday, 21 March 2011. PROPOSAL FOR EFFICIENCY SAVINGS BASED ON PERFORMANCE MANGEMENT. An analysis of accident rates across all 10 UK regions show that safety is consistently high at over 95% but there is a variation from 95 to 99% - the average being 97%. Further details as to specifics of accidents in the under-performing regions is beyond the scope of this document but also considered unnecessary. Posted by Bernard Stacey.

The Red Dolphin: Paul helps set up a new service

http://red-dolphin-on-health.blogspot.com/2011/02/paul-helps-set-up-new-service.html

Hard-hitting scrutiny on the politics of health. Wednesday, 16 February 2011. Paul helps set up a new service. Despite the rumblings of discontent that the new methods of administration had brought, work continued apace. The Ferraris were driven out to executives for the weekend; the removals vans could barely keep up with demand; the estate cars towed caravans until their drivers nearly broke down with exhaustion; the bulldozer cleared the way for everyone to go to work each day. For heavens sake, Mabel!

The Red Dolphin: July 2010

http://red-dolphin-on-health.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Hard-hitting scrutiny on the politics of health. Monday, 12 July 2010. So the new NHS vision has been released. GPs will be responsible for a huge amount of money, deciding in which services to invest, what services to buy from local providers, how to create maximum competition between other NHS providers and the private sector. Over 150 Primary Care Trusts will go, as will ten Strategic Health Authorities along with the legions of ineffective middle management that staff these organisations.

The Red Dolphin: Big Society? No - Big Responsibility

http://red-dolphin-on-health.blogspot.com/2011/02/big-society-no-big-responsibility.html

Hard-hitting scrutiny on the politics of health. Sunday, 6 February 2011. No - Big Responsibility. Well, it never really looked like living, did it? The last week has witnessed several pre-terminal gasps from Mr Cameron's Big Idea. Charities leaders are lambasting the public sector cuts that are severing the lifeline that should have fed the initiative and a flagship council withdraws from the programme citing, again, cuts. The Red Dolphin: Paul makes sense of economics

http://red-dolphin-on-health.blogspot.com/2011/02/paul-makes-sense-of-economics.html

Hard-hitting scrutiny on the politics of health. Monday, 7 February 2011. Paul makes sense of economics. It was a fine summer's day. Paul sat by the open window and gazed at the activity outside. Presently he heard two of his workers - one driver and one of the fuel pump attendants - in conversation. Called the driver. "Can you give me a hand with this roof-rack. I need to remove it from the car before the next trip and it's a bit stuck.". Sure thing Jack," replied Billy. And they set to work. Countered ...

the inexplicable – "To the rational mind, nothing is inexplicable; only unexplained"

To the rational mind, nothing is inexplicable; only unexplained. Not a big deal…. April 5, 2017. Ever since I changed my phone number in September, I’ve been receiving all sorts of phone calls from unknown phone numbers. This normally wouldn’t bother me, as I never answer any phone calls from strangers anyways, but the voicemails these phone numbers leave are so incredibly odd that they have kept me up at night. Each voicemail always lasts exactly 6 seconds, and each voicemail is always completely silent.
