The Intellectual American: Death in Venice (1912)

http://www.theintellectualamerican.blogspot.com/2014/12/death-in-venice-1912.html

Observations on America from an Intellectual Perspective. Wednesday, December 24, 2014. Death in Venice (1912). I was not familiar with Thomas Mann’s novella until I read this new translation by Michael Henry Heim. In comparison with the previous translation by Stanley Applebaum. This new one is much more poetic and evocative in language and phrasing, something pointed out by Michael Cunningham in the introduction. He compares this new version to the one by H.T. Lowe-Porter. But when he gets to the train...

Observations on America from an Intellectual Perspective. Tuesday, November 25, 2014. For the first poem in Lionel Trilling’s anthology The Experience of Literature. O, I have killed my father dear,. O, I have killed my father dear,. And woe is me, O! But rather than reacting to her husband’s death, the role of the mother in the poem is more one of his conscience. She begins a series of questions that become ever more disturbing, almost more so than the deed itself. My dear son, now tell me, O. Simple te...

The Intellectual American: Athe-ist as Athe-does

http://www.theintellectualamerican.blogspot.com/2014/11/athe-ist-as-athe-does.html

Observations on America from an Intellectual Perspective. Thursday, November 27, 2014. Simon Critchley didn’t exactly change my life, but he did solidify a lot of things in my mind that I had been thinking about for a while and hadn’t yet decided upon. I had been reading Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins for a while- and so I certainly didn’t need convincing- but it wasn’t until I read the introduction to Simon Chritchley’s The Book of Dead Philosophers. Film Score Fanatic: January 2013

http://filmscorefanatic.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 12, 2013. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982). Though there have been some great scores from composers late in their careers, one thinks of Dimitri Tiomkin’s Guns of Navarone. Or Bernard Herrmann’s Taxi Driver. Perhaps no composer had such a fruitful later career as Miklós Rózsa, who scored films like The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. And Eye of the Needle. At the end of his career. But the score of his that is perhaps most impressive is his last, Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. Is an incred...

Saturday, October 11, 2008. The Jazz Project - Fangs. S last album came out on Verve in 1999. Reissues? Well, now that the Blue Note and OJC catalogues have been pretty well exhausted, what remains might be interesting (Chess, Duke/Peacock, etc.) but I don't think there are any hidden Sidewinder. S or Soul Station. S left out there. (Unless you count Sonny Criss. S At The Crossroads. Which has been released in Japan.). And Stacie McGregor's Straight Up. As a fan for years of Grant Green. The Hard Bop Homepage Blog: Isaac Hayes

http://hardbophomepage.blogspot.com/2008/08/isaac-hayes.html

Wednesday, August 13, 2008. Is still one of my favorite albums . . . ever . . . in any genre. There have been numerous versions of Isaac Hayes' "Theme from Shaft" but I wanted to share with you one of my favorites. It's from the 1974 album by Maynard Ferguson MF Horn 2. In terms of fusion/big band sessions from the 70s, this has to be near the top of the list in terms of both song selection and solos. The opener, "Give It One," is probably the best Ferguson track from the entire decade. Have a Nice Decade.
