FRANK Communication training | thelearningvet

https://thelearningvet.wordpress.com/2012/06/28/240

Treat the patient, not the numbers. The best laid plans… →. June 28, 2012 · 4:10 am. A dream of mine came true today: I attended the first day of the Pfizer FRANK Communication workshop! It’s a 1.5 day workshop, and today was Day 1. Somehow, I missed the advance reading assignment, so I was worried I would feel behind. Fortunately, the Frank presentation Dr. Holzhauer had brought to our hospital had prepared me well, and I’m interested enough in this stuff that I had already read one book (. There were s...

Friday the 13th →. July 1, 2012 · 2:53 am. The best laid plans…. Excited to practice my new communication skills (see my recent post about the FRANK Communication Workshop. I attended), I picked up the phone to dial my 4:30 consultation about some rabbits. The client lived far away and had questions regarding her “herd” of about 100 rabbits (started as a 4-H project). The staff had warned me this would be a challenging conversation. I could have set the phone down, walked away for 5-10 minutes, come back...

What I Learned This Week. FRANK Communication training →. May 31, 2012 · 2:05 am. Treat the patient, not the numbers. Photo Credit: Lewis Cole. I remember in vet school, one of the clinical instructors said, “Treat the patient, not the numbers.” One of our patients was a miniature schnauzer with pure red cell aplasia–her bone marrow wasn’t making red blood cells. Her hematocrit hovered around 8%! Her final hematocrit was 5%.). For me, it’s probably once a month or so? Filed under General medicine. Then t...

The best laid plans…. Reflecting on the past year and choosing my three words for next year →. July 24, 2012 · 2:40 am. Some days, it feels like nothing goes as planned. Friday the 13th was one of those days. My schedule included two prophys, a dog and a cat. I also agreed to radiograph two raptors for Operation Wildlife. I thought I might actually have some time to catch up on some projects. Just when I thought I should go to lunch, we had an urgent care exam walk in: a 10 lb Pomeranian that had been pi...

Still kicking–sort of →. January 1, 2013 · 3:24 am. Reflecting on the past year and choosing my three words for next year. Each year, instead of a New Year’s Resolution, I choose three words to help guide my decisions and how I live my life. Last year at this time, I was holding a brand new baby in my arms, and the words I chose to guide the oncoming year reflected my deep sense of commitment to her and my family: Nurture the future. I announced my plans to step down as president of a non-profit organiza...

Life of a Veterinary Student: May 2011

http://lifeofaveterinarystudent.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Friday, May 6, 2011. 4 Years in Reflection. Clearly, I like lists I am a type A vet student. As the week of graduation quickly approaches, I wanted to reflect on the top 10 things that have happened to me over the past 4 years. Traveled to China, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Scotland and England, and Spokane, Washington. Rescued my dog on a Humane Society RAVS trip. Learned how to handle wild raptors, songbirds, and mammals. Lived in Blacksburg, VA, a special place indeed. Became a crossfit junkie. This blog e...

Life of a Veterinary Student: September 2010

http://lifeofaveterinarystudent.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, September 16, 2010. Today I watched a cataract surgery and a surgery for a melting corneal fungal ulcer in a horse. That was pretty neat. Horses are less scary when they are asleep and he recovered really well. We put a graft over the defect, which was also neat to watch. Wednesday, September 8, 2010. Orthopedic Surgery coming to a close. My next 3 week romp will be with ophthamology and the amazing Dr. Pickett. I am excited for that busy service as well. Sunday, March 20, 2011. Only 2 Rotations Left! I have mentioned it before in recent postings, but I cannot tell you how odd it is to be happy and sad at the same time with a dash of disbelief on top. I can vividly remember second year feeling as if becoming a veterinarian was a path with an unattainable destination. Well the destination is heading toward me very quickly. Blue Ridge Parkway proximity- a vista, mountain, trail, friendly face at every mile. Roanoke Non-Ultra Trail Series and Roanoke's charm.

Life of a Veterinary Student: December 2010

http://lifeofaveterinarystudent.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Monday, December 27, 2010. Regretful Happenings of 2010:. My 2003 Honda Accord's transmission dies the day after Christmas 2009. The ice and snow storm create significant water damage and headaches at the townhouse. Matt takes a 20% pay cut for a few months in the fall. My 1 week between 3rd and 4th year involves a trip to Boston to see my best friend, but a delayed volcanic cloud inhibits us from meeting up. Spokane now resides with dad more than mom. The Good of 2010:. Visited Fallingwater, finally.

Wednesday, November 24, 2010. Vacation Block-the good, bad and ugly. Small animal medicine, block, 9, ended very well. A very prestigious clinician agreed to write me a very strong letter of recommendation. Garfield's eye was healing well finally and I drove home. I visited some doctors, and spent the rest of my first week studying for the stupid. And the story was the same. It was more trivia than clinically relevant questions, and no one was happy afterward. Feeling a little more confident I he...The v...

Thursday, April 7, 2011. Today I got to experience some alternative medicine therapies applied to chronic back pain; tomorrow I will massage my horse with a human electric massager! 9 more days of horses than off to work with wildlife. I cannot believe that my life as a veterinary student is coming to a close. Congratulations o how far you have traveled. You will do great! Are you sure you dont want to be a large animal vet? So needed in Arizona :):). April 12, 2011 at 1:00 AM. They have a wildlife block?

Monday, June 28, 2010. Week 1 in China: A Summary. A list of Chinese habits that are outside my Westernized comfort zone:. Spitting inside buses and buildings. Amusement at animal taunting. Lack of overall bathroom hygiene- the closer they come the louder they yell. Eastern squat toilets and no toilet paper. Rivers of raw sewage running through town. Driving on any side of the road. Lack of English in well- touristed areas. Whole pig carcasses carried by scooter. 8230;to mention a few. I help with transl...

Thursday, July 29, 2010. Lobby Day with the Humane Society was an excellent culmination of the Taking Action for Animals Conference. My day began by leading some citizen lobbyists from the hotel to the Russell Senate Building. 11 fellow Virginians and I strategized. Puppies. If someone is not an animal advocate, they usually cannot argue the public health side. It was my version of thinking on my feet and again an outgoing moment for me. http://lifeofaveterinarystudent.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 14, 2011. Block 16 into Block 17. I have truly enjoyed working with horses. WHile I still don't know the lingo or how to lunge a horse, I do know a nice horse when I meet one and totally understand why they are deemed amazing creatures. I hope to have some trail/pleasure horses one day and definitely want to learn how to basic ride. Thursday, April 7, 2011. 9 more days of horses than off to work with wildlife. I cannot believe that my life as a veterinary student is coming to a close.

January 1, 2014 · 5:58 am. Still kicking–sort of. Last year at this time, I chose three words to guide me in 2013: Listen. Organize. Energize. Here’s the truth: I think I failed on all three fronts. I couldn’t even remember what my three words were until I looked at them just moments ago. Part of me thinks perhaps I should not choose three words for next year, but what if that’s the beginning of the end? Does it mean I’m giving up? Or am I becoming complacent? Don’t give up.
