Before there were Puncs there were Grunts. After the Grunts had been turned into Written Words thousands of years ago, the Puncs arrived to put the Words in order but they didn’t all appear at the same time. First came the Early Puncs: the Moabite (Phoenician) Full Stops and (many years later) the Roman colons. Then came the Middle Puncs such as the Anglo-Saxon Commas. Followed by the Later Puncs such as the Medieval Brackets and the Elizabethan Apostrophes.

Fergus Full Stop is No. 1 Punc. His job is to keep the words and sentences and other Puncs in order. Fergus is very proud of his ancestors who, it is said, were the first Full Stops in history. The Punctuation Guide
The general rule is that a sentence ends with only one terminal punctuation mark. There are three options: the period. And the exclamation point. In less formal writing, an interrupted sentence may end with an em dash . Or a sentence that trails off may end with an ellipsis (. . .). Pausing points include the comma. Covered elsewhere, can also indicate pause. The hyphen ( - ). And em dash . Look similar but are of different lengths. They also perform different functions. Chicago Manual of Style.
