Semicolon -- The Punctuation Guide

http://www.thepunctuationguide.com/semicolon.html

The semicolon is sometimes described as stronger than a comma but weaker than a period. In certain uses, this is a reasonably accurate definition. Yet there is more to the semicolon than that. Between independent clauses when a coordinating conjunction is omitted. Most commonly, the semicolon is used between two independent clauses (i.e., clauses that could stand alone as separate sentences) when a coordinating conjunction ( for. The example above could be recast with the conjunction but. The semicolon c...

2

Titles of works -- The Punctuation Guide

http://www.thepunctuationguide.com/titles-of-works.html

The titles of certain works are indicated with quotation marks, others with italics, and yet others with regular type. The style presented here is consistent with The Chicago Manual of Style. 16th ed.) and the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. 7th ed.), and is appropriate for most academic and professional writing. Newspapers tend to favor quotation marks in place of italics for most titles. Titles set in italics. Titles in quotation marks. Titles set in regular type. Cartoons or comic strips.

3

Question Mark -- The Punctuation Guide

http://www.thepunctuationguide.com/question-mark.html

The question mark is used at the end of a direct question. Indirect questions take a period. Direct question: What is she doing tonight? Indirect question: I wonder what she’s doing tonight. Direct question: The question is, Does anyone support this legislation? Indirect question: The question was whether anyone supported the legislation. Direct questions within a sentence. Would they make it on time? The key question, Can the two sides reach a compromise? What are we having for dinner? The question mark...

4

Em dash -- The Punctuation Guide

http://www.thepunctuationguide.com/em-dash.html

The em dash is perhaps the most versatile punctuation mark. Depending on the context, the em dash can take the place of commas. In each case to slightly different effect. Notwithstanding its versatility, the em dash is best limited to two appearances per sentence. Otherwise, confusion rather than clarity is likely to result. Do not mistake the em dash for the slightly narrower en dash . Or the even narrower hyphen (-). Those marks serve different purposes and are further explained in other sections.

5

The Punctuation Guide

http://www.thepunctuationguide.com/index.html

The general rule is that a sentence ends with only one terminal punctuation mark. There are three options: the period. And the exclamation point. In less formal writing, an interrupted sentence may end with an em dash . Or a sentence that trails off may end with an ellipsis (. . .). Pausing points include the comma. Covered elsewhere, can also indicate pause. The hyphen ( - ). And em dash . Look similar but are of different lengths. They also perform different functions. Chicago Manual of Style.

Private Home Care Services. Are we a Co-dependent society? This article appeared in the The New York Times on November 3, 2015. This is scary folks. We live in a country where countless issues like these are decided upon every day in our courts and congressional halls ( which in itself makes a sad statement about our society on several levels I won’t get into right now). But is that really true? How about this for a hypothesis? To make too many of our decisions. 8211; photo courtesy of the CATO Institute.

Self-Editing Advice

http://www.theflashfictionpress.org/some-advise-about-editing-your-own-work

If you read your work like you normally read, it is very easy to gloss over mistakes. Sub-vocalization makes you slow down and makes you go word by word. The final check is best done by reading aloud, as if you were reading a story to a child at bedtime. Be ruthless in the use of your delete key. If you can get the meaning across with fewer words, then fewer words is better. Just because you wrote it initially doesn’t mean it is written in stone. Vary the length of sentences. Rick Taubold and Scott Gamboe.
