Madness | therollingpen

https://therollingpen.wordpress.com/2016/07/18/madness

July 18, 2016. Photo taken at Sugarbakers on Chincoteague Island, Virginia (2016). I once entered a writing contest three days before the deadline. There was the challenge in a magazine, as they say, out there in the open. A couple of free days ahead. How could I say no? Did I use the word focus? Does it make sense? Would he really insist that his steak is medium rare? Wouldn’t love be easier for him than steak and eggs at a diner? Do we really need to invoke Shakespeare into his meal? The man in line, w...

July 10, 2016. July 10, 2016. Photo taken on Assateague Island National Seashore 2016. Today I was chopping celery that’s all it took, to remember how my oldest brother would tell me to put those in water and they’d last longer. I didn’t even know if it was true but my brother said it, so that was true enough for me. I was a lot younger, and I just about loved everything he said. He was a good swimmer, a good boxer, a good student. I went off to college wondering about him all the time. Where was he?

Just a few words. August 7, 2016. August 8, 2016. Photograph taken in spring of 2016 of an old barn my father built. Beyond the Window Pane. I had a bed last night on Bishop Street, where the houses are squat and low as if burdened by the sky. And yesterday, I learned that there are few tears in poverty. I went to bed and after a while drifted off to sleep. I don’t remember if I dreamed. The morning light, yellow and ivory laden, filtered in through thin curtains. My Little Ginny Wren. November 7, 2016. November 7, 2016. Just for a few minutes let’s take a break from this election madness remember the kind of days we loved when we were kids. When we were just enjoying life. Let’s take a few minutes away. Come along with me on my kind of day, and you can also tell me about yours. We can worry about the election all day tomorrow. It will be there. Man at the Market. My Little Ginny Wren. July 31, 2016. July 31, 2016. Toys in the attic, by painter J. Stewart. There’s the Ginny Wren. I love the Ginny Wren, loud in the morning. Have you ever seen one? Yet, mother and I sat and watched the morning. I saw the fog roll out of the holler as the sun rose over the trees, brightening the little valley. The woods became no quieter. The woods do not whisper until the heat of the day comes on. Just a few words. 10 thoughts on “ My Little Ginny Wren. August 1, 2016 at 12:34 am.

From This Day Forward. Standing on the Promise-Haggai 2:19. It’s Never Just Another Sunday. Where Do the Stories Go? March 20, 2014. But I did not stop them. The boys always had questions. Questions I could not always answer. I read aloud the tombstones — names, dates, and verses if there were any. But the boys wanted more. How did they die? Why are they buried here? Do they have kids? Where is their family? Are they in heaven? They were thoughtful in their questions. Did they die in the war? Do they, li...

From This Day Forward. Standing on the Promise-Haggai 2:19. It’s Never Just Another Sunday. March 12, 2014. Three days after the tornado, Bob and I were asked to share in Wednesday evening service at our church. To share our thoughts and feelings, to encourage others as we encourage ourselves, to try to understand just a smidgen about life in this specific moment. And what about the rest of our lives? We all had questions. We all wanted to bring some sense of order to the chaos. Bob briefly shared what w...

From This Day Forward. Standing on the Promise-Haggai 2:19. It’s Never Just Another Sunday. Just Because It’s Spring…. April 4, 2014. Through dusty windows of dormant views. Sunbeams stretch in timid tones. To touch, within, the darkened sockets. And decorate the dark. Boxelders sneak through doorway cracks. To pose on sun-warmed windowsills,. Grateful for another chance. To leave the tunnel and feel the light. Reflections dance on wintered walls. Like smoldering embers of the soul. The Truth About Lies.
