Playing Doctor: What's So: Thanksgiving 2012
http://michaelplumer.blogspot.com/2012/11/whats-so-thanksgiving-2012.html
Monday, November 26, 2012. What's So: Thanksgiving 2012. Creation requires vision, but it also requires an accurate appraisal of what’s so in the present. I’m powerless to create change without accepting the conditions from which creation starts. For example, if I want to restore a hurricane-damaged house, it’s important to have a vision of the restored result. So, too, in my life. I have clear ideas about how I’d like things to be. Yet the path to the life I want begins with the life I have. My new fami...

My life, under the microscope...: it ain't over: fighting the ivory ban
http://blog.katherineplumer.com/2014/03/it-aint-over-fighting-ivory-ban.html
Thursday, March 13, 2014. It ain't over: fighting the ivory ban. You can kick me and call me bad names later for being so utterly sucky about updating my blog, but I'm going to ask for your urgent help again. On February 11, 2014, the White House and the US Fish and Wildlife Service announced the National Strategy for Combating Wildlife Trafficking and Commercial Ban on Trade in Elephant Ivory. This will criminalize the domestic ivory trade and made it all but impossible to do anything involving ivory.

My life, under the microscope...: Happy New Year!
http://blog.katherineplumer.com/2015/01/happy-new-year.html
Thursday, January 01, 2015. A few months ago, I sat around with some of my artist friends, a bunch of “horse people” and we talked about how we all thought 2014 was going to be amazing for us because it was the Year of the Horse. Should be our year, right? I know, I’m vague. When I’ve neglected to say so many things, I don’t even know where to start. I’ll try to do better. Thanks for the posts, Jann. Thursday, January 01, 2015 1:26:00 PM. Friday, January 02, 2015 4:30:00 AM. That sounds naughty.)....

My life, under the microscope...: June 2013
http://blog.katherineplumer.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, June 04, 2013. Big shoutout to a little horse. Happy 10th Birthday to Shylah! My my how the years have flown since I got that scrappy scrawny little horse from Canada. She's really blossomed a lot this last year, and seems to enjoy not only her horsey friends but also her new role as a trail and cow horse. And we've come a long way learning to trust each other. That's a great feeling when it's just me and her by ourselves way out in the boonies. Is it REALLY her birthday? If you took an artist, ...

Playing Doctor: August 2010
http://michaelplumer.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Friday, August 20, 2010. Customer delight equals medical quality. Right? The larger health system of which my hospital is a part has for several years exhorted its employees to remember AIDET – perhaps the most awkward acronym every devised in service of a noble purpose. AIDET stands for Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, and Thanks, or something close. The acronym is meaningless, the construction isn’t parallel, and the actions are listed out of order to create the acronym. Not entirely....

Playing Doctor: The Eye Man Cometh
http://michaelplumer.blogspot.com/2013/01/the-eye-man-cometh.html
Sunday, January 27, 2013. The Eye Man Cometh. 8220;Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick…”. This week I’ll pay a man to stick a sharp knife in my only functional eye. He’ll destroy the lens through which I’ve watched my life for 68 years and leave an oddly-shaped bit of clear plastic in its place. He’ll do all this under topical anesthesia while I’m wide awake. This lens, I expect, will restore my once-dependable distance vision. I groped my way to the meeting, guessing at familiar sights, fee...

My life, under the microscope...: May 2013
http://blog.katherineplumer.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Wednesday, May 29, 2013. The excitement of roundup season! So I worked real hard to get her in shape, especially in the last few months. I rode as much as I could, went up and down as many hills as I could, went out and checked cows a lot, and so on and so forth. We were ready this year! And it was so much fun! Moving quickly in that situation doesn't seem to come too naturally. ;-). And yet, I'd kinda hoped for a few more weekends of that. ;-). Waiting for the boss to show up on the first morning. Last ...

Playing Doctor: If Treatment Is Expensive, Is It Therefore Effective?
http://michaelplumer.blogspot.com/2013/03/if-treatment-is-expensive-is-it.html
Monday, March 18, 2013. If Treatment Is Expensive, Is It Therefore Effective? Our hospital CEO mentioned at an administrative meeting the other day that an anesthesiologist who owns a pain clinic on the mainland is aggressively pursuing an appointment with her. He wants to talk, she thinks, about providing some service on our island. She says that he has an impressive website and 20 employees. We Googled the website at the meeting. She’ll meet with him soon, I imagine. What can he offer? In particular, f...

My life, under the microscope...: March 2013
http://blog.katherineplumer.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 18, 2013. Sorry for the lack of postings. life is just flying past at a seriously disturbing pace, and every night around midnight or 1am (which is when I usually wrap up for the day) I think about all the stuff I forgot or didn't have a chance to do, and blogging is usually on that list. And here it is after midnight right now, ha. I moved the last of the birds up here last week, and we were able to get the chicken house "done enough" over the weekend. It's really turning out cool! I've ap...
