On the Somme: Poets, Artists, Composers,Thinkers and Writers. A Work in Progress. The Somme Project is about the site of battle, landscape and memory; rather than just about the battle itself. After nearly one hundred years the Somme landscape remains intimately marked by what occurred after that fateful day of 1st July 1916. Their experiences were condensed and re-surfaced in their works, during, after and often years long after the First World War.  Day succeeded unto Day, Night to pensive night .

Q: What happened following your period of service with The Coats Mission? MEH: Well the Coats Mission eventually, I left it before it was disbanded and went back then to the Holding Battalion which was at Regent’s Park. Q: What were your duties? Madresfield Court | The Somme

And other war interests. In June 2011 I visited Madresfield Court and had the chance to meander through the gardens and round the perimeters leaving time to consider the defences as they might have been in WW2. Then, the house was earmarked for the Royal Family, should they have needed to leave London in a hurry. Part of my grandfather’s work in the Coats Mission was to visit houses periodically to ensure the defences were in order. View across the outer moat. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Four-word horro...
Malcolm Hancock, MC | The Somme
https://thesomme.wordpress.com/malcolm-hancock
And other war interests. Malcolm Hancock, MC. Malcolm was my paternal grandfather. He served in both World Wars. In The Great War he fought at Gallipoli (Suvla Bay, Hill 60) until wounded out, where he won an MC. In The Second World War he was part of. A unit which protected members of the Royal family and had in place escape routes for them. He then joined the Holding Battalion. And in particular spent time at Chequers. He then joined the Auxiliary Units. Four fairly exceptional jobs by any standards.

And other war interests. This site began on 12th August 2009. I have had an interest in The Somme Battlefields for 30 years and continue to visit and research each year. However, the site has also developed into a place to centralise and publish some of my family war history. And then there are the tales of his four Australian cousins from the Parkes family, who fought on the Western Front and Gallipoli, two of whom did not get to go home. And more recently, I have uncovered details about John Michael By...

WWI medals and items belonging to Malcolm Hancock | The Somme
https://thesomme.wordpress.com/malcolm-hancock/wwi-medals-and-items-belonging-to-malcolm-hancock
And other war interests. WWI medals and items belonging to Malcolm Hancock. On the left I believe is a miniature MC. No-one quite knows where his original is! On the right is a miniature 1914 Star. Alongside the medals, some ribbon from, presumably, the Original MC and Star. His compass engraving. The engraving suggests it belonged to his father Alfred Ernest Hancock, who must have been in the same regiment, tough I cannot confirm that. Can anyone enlighten me? Leave a Reply Cancel reply.
