https://thetherethere.wordpress.com/2010/07/25/oops-i-did-it-again-or-a-day-at-the-mayakovsky-museum

Finding a little place of time. Oops… i did it again OR a day at the mayakovsky museum. My Discovery of America,. Which of course I haven’t. (Oops again.) Despite having waded through hundreds, maybe even thousands, of his documents, photographs, and poems for a few hours yesterday, I’m not sure that I actually know that many more facts about him now. Maybe some photos of the exhibition might better explain why:. This slideshow requires JavaScript. 1) because in the last week I obviously also watched.

Finding a little place of time. Some meandering thoughts on how to deal, courtesy of my ipod. I asked my new friend Max, a young Russian guy who likewise decided to spend the day napping and reading in the adjacent armchair to avoid the smog, if he had heard anything about when the air would clear up. He laughed heartily. When he saw I didn’t share his amusement, he offered unconvincingly, Maybe a week? And couldn’t help but add, Maybe never. Trackback ( 0 ). Comments ( 1 ). August 26th, 2010. from inside the smog | the there there

https://thetherethere.wordpress.com/2010/08/04/from-inside-the-smog

Finding a little place of time. From inside the smog. Last night I started writing a post about some of the recent exhibitions at Daria Zhukova’s Center for Contemporary Culture Garage. I had intended to finish it this morning, but I won’t. What happened between last night and this morning? Sunrise from two weeks ago. View from my window yesterday. View from my window this morning. But here is what I don’t understand what I, at this point, admittedly. To understand while 90-year-old babushkii are on the ...

things could always be worse | the there there

https://thetherethere.wordpress.com/2010/08/06/things-could-always-be-worse

Finding a little place of time. Things could always be worse. Both here now in Moscow and three years ago in Vladivostok, I would often steel myself against frustration and, well, despair by reminding myself that things could always be worse. I’m beginning to think that something in the atmosphere here turns those words from an encouragement to count one’s blessings into a cruel, literalizing promise. Trackback ( 0 ). Comments ( 0 ). Allison Road: September 2010

http://allisonroadblog.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, September 16, 2010. Things I procrastinated today. Things I procrastinated today:. Waking up (snooze, baby). Doing my job . I put off a simple number check ALL DAY LONG. Answering e-mails - also avoided all day long. Calling about an apartment - which is crazy because I'm sleeping on a HIDE-A-BED. Deciding whether to go to happy hour. I decided AS PEOPLE WERE LEAVING. (I went.). Reading about how to stop procrastinating. Monday, September 13, 2010. Am I getting old? Who says things like that?

Monday, September 13, 2010. Creative uses for items from mom's garden:. 1) Cucumber and mint face masks! Http:/ allrecipes.com/ Recipe/zucchini-cobbler-2/Detail.aspx. What a great week. Nothing compares to the healing power of facials, mani-pedis, gardening, sleeping in, new recipes, satin sheets, bike rides and MOMS. I'm still processing, still sorting out this whole Russia experience and not sure what to make of it all. But I do know that It's really, really, REALLY good to be home. Benja's b - log.

Allison Road: Ghosts, part 2

http://allisonroadblog.blogspot.com/2010/08/ghosts-part-ii.html

Thursday, August 26, 2010. Ghosts, part 2. I just realized that the subconscious influence behind my last post. Was a collection of pictures I saw recently. Photographer Sergei Larenkov started with photos of the siege of Leningrad in WWII, then photographed the exact same places today and combined them in Photoshop, reminding people of the history that happened on the same streets they walk down every day. The result is haunting, and cool:. See more photos from the collection here. Ghosts, part 2.

Allison Road: Rostov’s believe-it-or-not

http://allisonroadblog.blogspot.com/2010/08/rostovs-believe-it-or-not.html

Friday, August 27, 2010. On Thursday I met up with Lyudmila, Alya and Ruslan, some of my dearest friends from my mission days in Rostov. We met in Gorky Park, in the center of the city, and caught up over ice cream and juice. I met Ira, Alya’s daughter, a 100% sweetheart:. And then, because we had a little extra time, Alya suggested we visit the Peter the Great Kuntzkamera exhibit in the museum nearby. I didn’t know what Kuntzkamera meant, but a museum exhibit sounded lovely to me, so I agreed. I kind of...

Thursday, August 26, 2010. Congrats to the happy couple! Yay for Zach and Heather! Blogger and iPhone and Microsoft and Russia are conspiring to make it impossible to turn this picture right side up. I can't fix it now but will repost soon. In the meantime, please celebrate by standing on your heads.). Allison Road: Moscow burning

http://allisonroadblog.blogspot.com/2010/08/moscow-burning.html

Saturday, August 7, 2010. There's a scene near the end of the novel. Where the devil sits on top of the Vorobyovi Hills in Moscow and watches fires burn in different parts of the city. Apparently Bulgakov originally planned to have the entire city go up in flames (perhaps as a statement about Moscow, the guardian of Orthodoxy, the “Third Rome, never to be a fourth”). I think that was the first day I came home and put my head in the freezer to cool off. Photos from the Moscow Times. Ghosts, part 2.

Allison Road: Kiev Temple

http://allisonroadblog.blogspot.com/2010/08/kiev-temple.html

Tuesday, August 31, 2010. And now, to the point of our arduous journey to Kiev: the dedication of the newest temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. And after his short talk, he actually gave noogies to his interpreter. The Ukrainian choir director, on the other hand, conducted furiously, passionately. It made me smile. And it really made me smile. In Russia, bigger is better, deeper is better, more passionate is better! It’s 100% from the heart. Yulia looked around at the hundreds of ...

Allison Road: Today I am as old in years as all the Jewish people

http://allisonroadblog.blogspot.com/2010/08/today-i-am-as-old-in-years-as-all.html

Tuesday, August 31, 2010. Today I am as old in years as all the Jewish people. About ten years ago, I read a poem by Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko dedicated to Babi Yar, the site of a Nazi massacre of 100,000 Ukrainian and Russian Jews. I was so moved by its indignation, its pathos, that it's always stuck with me. And today, I went there. Babi Yar today is a winding, grassy, mowed ravine just a few hundred meters from a metro station on Kiev's green line. For the people who died? In the end, I prayed ...

What DAH does, he finds it. Something from Nothing Leaves Lunch. Why is there nothing instead of something? You mean, "Why is there something instead of nothing? No, I don't mean that. What are you talking about? It's a philosophical question, "Why is there something instead of nothing? I heard you, but you're not making sense. Finding a little place of time. On the other side of comfort. I’m sitting by the window at a little café in Berkeley, uncomfortably warm in the October sun but also unwilling to relinquish the comfort of either my cardigan or my chamomile tea. It’s the 15. On Saturday, my sister, cousin Mina and I took Logan and Alex over to the Lewiston Mall to see Santa. There was only one little girl in line when we got there and she did not want to go near him. Her mother was trying to get her to stand beside Santa, but she flat out refused, so Alex waltzed up and cut in front of her! Posted by Barbie @ 12/06/2009 08:54:00 PM. This morning while I was having breakfast, Alex put this on the table next to me. When I asked him what it was he said, "Flowers for Momma!
